They sold all the 500 plus roses propagated from the roses in the Historic Rose Garden here. They were lined up early and the sale was brisk. the other two gardens had relatively few visitors. It rained most of the day. Rained more this morning. All much needed. I went on one guided tour myself given by Fred Boutin who was a botanist at Huntington and an avid rose collector whose rose collection was the start of the Historic Rose Gardens collection. He was fascinating....an incredible wealth of knowledge. Going rose to rose with the history of each, their provenance and bloodline. For me it was at the end of a long and wet but satisfying day. There were about 200 visitors for the event. Thanks for asking Mike. There were several people from the LA basin who made it up here for the sale. I tip my hat to you.

My sister who lives up there was supposed to attend but I haven't heard from her yet as to if she went.
I gave her the link to your original story and that's what piqued her interest. Hurray!

Fred is an incredible man. That tour must have been fantastic. Lucky you.
I'd rather weed than dust ... the weeds stay gone longer.

He has a mind like a steel trap I think. I'd love to hear anything he'd care to impart. He must have lots of admirers.

News...We had our meeting with the Preservation Commission. It started at 530pm and lasted until 1100pm. It was grueling. We had 32 people speak and only one was against. We were the biggest group this commission has seen. There are seven people on the Commission one of which is the person who develop the planting guidelines that were the heart of our dilemma. She spoke first and then we all did our three minutes each. The outcome is that those guidelines are now out until a new set can be work out with more input from experts of various disciplines and with input from the volunteers who manage the gardens. I expect this will be a long drawn out process and the results may be the same or worse. Who knows. The entire meeting is available at the City site. April 13. We were second on the agenda. We started about 2 hrs in I think. I couldn't listen to it all again. Too soon. I tip my hat to you. Edited to add simple hyperlink BB code but it didn't seem to work. Copy and past this and you'll see the meetings listed. OUrs was April 13th 2016 http://sacramento.granicus.com...

Great job!!! I've been wondering how things went. It is shocking to me, that government can be so intrusive it forces 5 1/2 hours of testimony to occur, over the fate of roses! Mind bending.

Well I am very impressed at how people stepped in and stood up for what is right in the world!!!! While I realize it's still a long road, take it a day at a time and realize that a lot of people are rooting for you! Hurray! Thumbs up nodding

In for a penney in for a pound. We serve at the pleasure of the city. They seem to be heading in a better direction now that we've held their feet to the fire of public scrutiny. That be said we have paid a price for that. All the consequences are yet to be seen. Relationships have been sundered. They should all come into the garden be still, take a long slow deep breath. Have a stroll. Really see what's here. One can't help but enjoy it. Crossing Fingers!

The hyperlink above works for me? Here it is again you can copy and paste. Or you can highlight and search google and the top pick will be preservation commission. That will also get you to the same page as the hyperlink above.
