Wow, Mary that is a lot of mice. Blinking
We have hardware cloth in the bottom of our raised beds, but I'm wondering how long it lasts. We have had gophers in 2 of the beds now. They were built about 9 years ago.

Drop some mothballs down the holes, I've heard that works. I think the hardware cloth should last longer than that, it's galvanized. Maybe they climbed up the sides?? I don't picture gophers as climbers, but as I recall, your beds have 2x6 or 2x8 sides and a 4 inch long critter with claws might be able to climb a little. Did they eat the plant roots or just uproot them? You might want to call the extension office and ask, or google might tell you. I fight them in my vegie garden, and have trapped a few.

It was in the tall bed 24" high. It didn't seem to eat anything, just made a mound and covered up a big patch of semps. He made one appearance and hasn't been back since. Must not have like what he found. Big Grin

Glad it didn't eat anything. Mounds sound more like moles. My gophers only make tunnels, eat off the plant root and sometimes pull the plant down into the hole (like in cartoons). I find their holes when I step and the ground gives way, or by digging with my hand where the plant was growing until I find the hole which is about 2 inches in diameter.

The gophers here make a mound, we've even seen them coming up out of the holes. The cat catches them occasionally, but is getting old so doesn't hunt much anymore. They love our squash, tomatoes and cucumbers. I can't grow lilies in the far back yard because they would eat them. The cement around the front yard and first back yard keep them for gaining access to those areas.

Come to think of it, the dirt they push around while making their tunnels does have to go somewhere! And I have found some mounds, but not where the plants disappeared. I probed where the plants were eaten, found a hole and made my assumption based on that. Gotta rethink now about where I set my trap. I'm learning stuff all the time.

I have been plagued by gophers for many years. I used to play with them when I was a child. Sit by their mound with a newly opened hole and wait for them to come up with more dirt. With patience and good thoughts, soon they would be sitting in front of me. From there they would end up in my lap with me petting and scratching them. Guess that's why I have such a difficult time killing them. Sad
