Alana, so glad to see you here! Welcome! Big Grin

I sure hope that everyone feels free to post in multiple regional forums. After all, this is a social media website and the point is to socialize! Group hug To that end, I've included links in our info box to the state forums that are in our region.

Speaking of that, I put up a first draft for the info box yesterday. I'd appreciate any feedback regarding the areas included, climate info, etc.
I'm working on a map, too. Thanks! Smiling

So I'm not really in the zones you have listed, Danita, since I'm in Orlando, but I used to live in north Alabama, so is it OK if I pop in every so often? I miss the accents Big Grin And magnolias are native to these parts as well. Whistling

I love this, and also the inclusive nature of the new forum:

- Humid Subtropical Climate
- Köppen climate = Cfa
- Hot, humid summers
- Mild to cool winters
- USDA Zones 6 - 8b/9a
- AHS Heat Zones 7 - 9

I must admit I had never heard of Köppen climate = Cfa *Blush*
It would not surprise me if we attracted members from other countries which share similar climates. Thumbs up

I looked for that first thing (a southeast region) and found none and so got the NC badge as a sort of identification ...I think it is a great idea and if something is needed for and about NC ..I will research and post -- just let me know. Great idea.

Working within this new Southeast Gardening forum I believe that a person could start a thread dedicated to one state or one part of a state. Does anyone else think that would be a good way to share information specific to an area?

I think it would be helpful to bookmark to share info about local conditions in the garden and local, nurseries,, plant sales, garden walks, etc.

That might work, and I would like to see a few posts using that method. Right now with the forum just getting started I think any type of post would be appreciated, and we can try different things and learn what works best. If nothing else, it might at least add a little variety to the posts.

Here in the Piedmont of NC..two hours or so from the mountains and the sea..we are mostly zone 7B with pockets in our yard that I think are more 7A.

Many homes in the rural buffer (just outside Chapel Hill) are on minimum of two acres...much of it wooded. Temper runs high about the issue of how to manage the deer. the deer are a huge problem. We have (I have no experience ) coyote. I see red fox -- not a problem. Every now and again (actually less than that ) a bear will cause problems -- on the highways. Once while gardening a peacock strolled right on by me. I said not a word... I thought it was my psychedelic past catching up with me. Later, the hubby saw it and did mention it...he has no psychedelic past. Rolling on the floor laughing

Not counting bee keeping and farms with animals ( those may have a different take on the greatest problems) the main gardening nuisance problems are the deer and the rabbits...birds to some extent and squirrels. Snakes don't impact the garden except in a beneficial way ...except if I think there IS a snake..I don't care if the Publisher's House AND the HGTV Dream Home folks come a knockin' -- nothing is getting done by me out there..and I ain't opening the door.

This area is flush with nurseries..very big and sorta small...ditto landscapers and garden designers. The big thing now is water features. Botanical gardens big and small, garden tours, educational opportunities related to gardening, and recycling, the environment, growing food, and conservation. There.are beautifully landscaped parks and lots of art and open studios. The county and the city offer reduced priced well made compost bins and composting classes and water collection barrels. The landfill offers no toxic chemical compost and mulch -- including glass mulch.

Our farmers markets are plentiful and the restaurants - many award winning - are farm to table. I believe the RTP/ Durham area won a national contest for food trucks..in short order many go in to successful small restaurants. Well, that is a bit of intro to this area...notice I did not mention Tarheels, Blue Devils, Wolfpack or anything sports related....I will probably go missing by morning! I would absolutely LOVE to hear about your area and access to all things green and growing.

Danita said:Well, of course, Ibis! Welcome!

Technically, all of Florida is considered the southeast, but the southern portion of it is just so different climatically.
What do you guys think, should we include all of Florida in the info-box list or stick with just "Northern Florida"?

Rosie, I don't envy your deer problem, but I am jealous of your gardening community and resources! Sounds great! Big Grin

Thanks for the feedback on the info-box! Also, special thanks to Greene for suggesting a tweak to the phrasing which made it sound much more upbeat. Thumbs up

It would be great to have members from other countries that share a similar climate. Green Grin!

Having threads focused on a particular state or sub-region sounds like a great idea to try. It might evolve into members organizing some fun local events like plant swaps or other garden meet-ups. Big Grin

P.S. Today, I split the thread so that the newest posts that were focused on introductions and welcoming new members have their own thread. Smiling
