I mainly want to know if it is poisonous. I removed everything I could find. I want to know if it should be something to worry when it comes back. I have small children with access to this part of my yard who like to forage.

I have no clue but always assume everything is poisonous until proven safe.

We have a Fungi Forum on ATP; I'll give a shout out to some of the folks who post over there:

I don't know a thing about mushrooms or fungi and I'd be very cautious with children and pets. I googled and it looks a bit like some pictured here: http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/t...

I found this page of California fungi with lots of different ones listed with photos: http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/spe... I didn't have time to look through them all but check out these for comparison:

I don't know what type of mushrooms they are either. But my children 'homesteaded' our backyard when they were kids. Mushrooms grow on decaying organic matter so eliminate the source. Watch out for other plants that may look edible to your kids, like Poison Hemlock which looks exactly like carrots.

I actually planted a grazing garden for my kids out in the family orchard. So they had access to all the fruit plus zucchini, asperagus, carrots, Miner's lettuce... I was careful to keep that part of the yard clear of anything harmful.

Fungi are everywhere - even in the air as spores. The planet can't exist without them and decay is a natural thing. Teach your children to not touch them or eat anything without asking an adult and they will be fine.

I have looked at hundreds of photos of mushrooms online, and nothing looks like what I have.
Thanks for your responses.
I will continue to remove the mushrooms when I find them.

Thank You! Welcome! I agree
Thanks Brandon!

Do you think it is Psathyrella candolleana?
Everything seems to match the description here.
http://www.mushroomexpert.com/...
But the images there only look similar.

This image seems to be a match
http://www.ambfgv.it/images/fo...

Would you consider it 'edible but not worthwhile'?

I found this.
http://www.first-nature.com/fu...
- "Culinary Notes
In many (but not all) field guides Psathyrella candolleana is recorded as 'edible but not worthwhile', while other field guides record it as inedible or edibility unknown. These mushrooms are insubstantial and it would take a lot of them to make a meal, so unless you are desperate and nothing else is available the Pale Brittlestem is probably not worth considering as a culinary collectible."

Just lurking here as I know nothing about mushrooms unless they are from the grocery store. My father-in-law learned to hunt mushrooms from his father in Czechoslovakia but never passed the knowledge on to us. Welcome Welcome! new member BrandonG; I see on your profile page that you are a mushroom hunter. Thumbs up
