What flower pattern is most prevalent in your iris garden

For those of us whose iris won’t bloom until June, I thought I would give incite a bit of mathematical activity to keep the rest of us busy. My iris are just peeking through the earth and I have almost 3 months of enviously looking at other people’s blooms before mine erupt in long-awaited glorious color. I was curious what was the most prevalent flower pattern in your garden? After looking at the ATP plant database and documenting the flower pattern of each bloom, I discovered the following about my iris:

Amoena 10% Favorite
Bicolor 7% Favorite
Bitone 8% Favorite
Blend 17% Favorite
Broken color 4% Favorite
Emma Cook 2% Favorite
Luminata 2% Favorite
Neglecta 2% Favorite
Plicata 26% Favorite
Self 15% Favorite
Variegata 6% Favorite

For those of us who do not have 100’S or 1000's of iris, I did my compilations in percentages so we will all be on the same platform. I am sure that my list does not have all of the possibilities of flower pattern; in fact I did not know I had an Emma Cook or a Neglecta until I checked my plant information from ATP. It will be interesting to see the propensity for flower patterns in our gardens. Enjoy doing a bit of mind-opening math.

I don't think Competitive Edge should be classed as a variegata. .......just my half cents worth.

We have everything but the kitchen sink. However seedlings I am working on the red amoena SDBs & not getting very far. Not sure what you would classify my MTBs.

I think I have one (and just one) of everything!!!

Wow, calculating this would be harder then doing my taxes. I'd have to add this detail to all 600+ cultivars in my data base first and then I could calculate it. I would estimate that my largest percentages would fall to the Selfs, Blends and Omoenas. Then I have a lot of plicatas, and Emma Cooks. A few luminatas and broken colors. But this is just a rough estimate, not real data.

Sorry to say I agree with Tom about the taxes. I didn't add the pattern type to my database so this question would take a lot of research to answer.
Then I remembered how to search the database (I think Debra posted how to do this in the Keppel thread???)

Checking the database it shows I have 216 selfs... Still need to look at the other pattern types and then do math...

Guess what I don't have a data base. Most of it is in my head. then add seedlings. Comes from learning to use a computer in my 70s.

Barbara - if you added a named iris to your database, then you can let the search feature in the iris database find the results for you!

Just go to Iris Database

Click Search by characteristics, then scroll down

Check the box of one of the "Flower Patterns" (first box is Self)

then scroll down to bottom, and under "Limit Options", check the box "Only show plants that are in my personal Plant Lists"

click search and voila!

There isn't an option to remove the "wants" from your personal plants lists. So the numbers will be off on your selections. Unless you go through and count the "haves", or count up and subtract the "wants".

Why this pattern of yellow standards and white falls rimmed yellow is called Debby Rairdon is beyond me but I have 3 of them (0.5% of my garden):

Which I did Rob - but then I don't have too many wants listed in my list. I forget to check it before I buy so it holds only the really really wants.

There's over 400 in my want list and over 500 in my have list. So it would take some time for me.

I'm sure the photos this Spring will push my want list back up to 500. ....

I would agree I really like blends and bitones. The Plicata category is skewed because they have iris like Spiderman in Plicatas, and I think it should be in Lines and Spreckles...

I tried to see the various Space Age varieties, but by all 4 categories (horns, spoons, flounces, pom poms) it says I only have 51 iris (8.2%) which I believe is too low.

I haven't updated my Plant List completely with this year's orders but can say that the majority are bitones like Cow Patty, and blends like Skip A Beat.

By the way that only came out to 84.5% of my iris. So the other 15.5% must be undefined in the database?

Some of the newest and oldest do not have a lot of information or photos. You will be able to add that when yours blooms. smiles......
