I will attempt to cross my double fernleaf with pollen from the pink fernleaf. Hopefully they will bloom about the same time. I see a couple of buds on my double fernleaf. If the pollination takes, I will continue to fertilize the plant to help it forms a viable pod.

Good luck, Karen! Mine are under a few inches of snow again, hopefully by the time it melts off I'll see some growth....

Had a nice productive day cleaning the fern leaf bed in preparation for the blooms to begin.

Jerry, I think you should look into styling your fern leaf bed like a Ryonji garden in Japan :)

Jerry,
A Zen bed. Are you going to divide the large ones and fill in more? I swear I can feel the soft folaige.

Alex,
Absolutely calming to look at!

Karen,
Mine have broken ground and are just ferny puff balls right now :o)

The beds are gorgeous, Sally! I love the low growing plants you have in the two beds. They really contrast nicely with the double fernleaf. Are those dwarf iris? I bet your beds will be more lovely this year with more plants clumping up and filling in. Just awesome!

I have been thinking of completely redoing the fern leaf bed. It was made in 2009 and most of the soil has settled and is tired. The organic material decays in time and leaves the rest compacted. I may just add 8 more inches of depth and fill it with new material then till the old and new together. I am knocking upon 76 so a project such as that may just be the ticket to keep me active. The one mature single could produce 6 or 8 new plants if it is divided. There are two regular peonies in the extreme back portion which could be moved and make room for more fern leafs.

Jerry, that sounds like a good project. I have been dividing some of my older peonies each fall, and I believe that it is beneficial.
That zen garden looks beautiful.

Karen,
They are intermediate Lilliput's from Schreiner's. My neighbor had extras. I LOVE them! These beds are a few years older now and need dug and replanted. Quackgrass got in somehow and has spread Grumbling Looking at the pictures, the beds sure do look good Thumbs up

Jerry,
I think that's a great idea. No time like the present, and I'm finding we are NOT getting any younger Sighing! The bed would look fantastic all filled in! I have a couple plants I think I'll divide and set somewhere else. They bloom so early and I need a splash of color in other beds.

Thanks Sally! It seems all kinds of grass get into my beds too. I don't use any weed killer so they just flourish. My lawn is a sad state all summer long. Dandelions in May & June, Clover in June & July, and crabgrass for the rest of the year. This year I surrender and bought a bag of lawn fertilizer with crabgrass preventer. It is supposed to suppress weed seeds germination.

Karen,
All the same problems here. We too get a bag of stuff every few years when it gets out of control, or DH spot sprays. We dig a lot of the dandelions.

Jerry,
Rosea looks good!

Mine have grown this much so far. See the lawn grass? That's in the pretty picture I posted earlier....

BP, your Rosea appears to be an older plant. Should really look nice when it blooms.
