So far it looks like I have lost 3 plants of the 60 something new plants that I added last year.

EVER SO SOFTLY (X2 plants, same garden, different areas)
DARINGLY DIFFERENT

The 3 that I lost were all in the same flower bed and it is obvious that they aren't returning. We had such a mild winter and almost everything in this garden, either didn't totally die off, or already has fans that are 4-8 inches tall. I find it weird that both of the Ever so Softly plants died. I am pretty confident that they are both gone since one clump of dead and rotted stuff came up when I picked up the tag to check the name.

Another one that I am worried about is SPICY CONNECTION. It is holding on by a fan. It looks like it will need some extra TLC.

At least when it is all said and done, I really only paid for one of the Ever so Softly plants, because they were B1G1 and the Daringly Different and the Spicy Connection were free gifts and the other 14 plants from that grower are doing absolutely spectacular! I am going to let the grower know about the Ever so Softly, because I noticed on their website in the description of EsS that because of the parentage that they were hoping that it would be hardy in the north. Maybe it isn't quite that hardy in zone 5b.

I just finished cleaning up all the beds with daylilies and I am happy that I didn't lose any this year, all are growing and looking good.

Heidi, sorry to hear about your losses. I would definitely let the grower know about Ever So Softly, even though it was an unusual winter. It might be worth a second try if you really liked it. It *was* a wonky winter.

I lost two, Undefinable and Polorized. Need I say more.

OK, I will.......lol, both from the same place, both sent after first bloom, or scapes cut off, problem was, it was way to hot and late. Others made them live, didnt for me. I learned a he<< of a lesson. Got to let it go. Angry

Other than that, all is well, except I dont have one, not one scape. Im at a loss. To much nitrogen I think, leaves are gorgeous.

gardenglory,
Sorry about your two great losses. I was beginning to wonder if it were possible to give daylilies too much nitrogen (well, I knew it was possible). So I find it interesting to see you think you have reached that point. Did you just spread the entire area with nitrogen, or did you apply it plant by plant? If so how much of what type fertilizer?

I am so sorry. Undefinable is near the top of my 'if money were no object' list (along with Pink Stripes-tet and maybe even Polarized.) What a heartbreak! That might even top my loss...I love Titan of Ice, it's my favorite, but Undefinable is just as hard to replace and is more costly. Ugh.

Mine are all in pots, and I just spread and dug in some milorganite. I do it to green the plants, but I dont know why I dont have scapes. If the scapes match what the plants are looking like, t least I might have some nice flowers. These nice big green plants dont seem to pick up the rust either. Mainly a problem on my strugglers.

As for loosing those plants, serves me right for ordering them in the first place. Wont happen again.
I have bids on two for my neighbor, thats all the buying 'Ive' done. Im sticking to seeds, and I ordered myself some consolation orchids.

Oh, well I also use milorganite, but being my plants are in the ground I add a high nitrogen fertilizer along with the milorganite, I don't think that is the cause of no scapes. I don't have any idea what is though.

If I had to guess, I would say they are not getting enough water. The pots dry out quite a bit faster than plants in the ground.

That still wouldn't explain the loss of those two (and I still think you should be on the seller for replacements, particularly if they were sent much later than you asked for).

I agree, I would be asking for a replacement. It didn't die because of winter, it died because of stress.

We have had copious amounts of rain. Best they have ever looked, well except they need to bloom. Im optomistic tho.
I really tried hrd with my plants last year, getting them happy in the fall and spring. Aside from the two Crossing Fingers!

I lost Indian Giver last year, I was surprised when it didn't come back last spring, since I was under the impression it was pretty hardy, and was in a good bed and mulched.

As for this years losses, too early here. I do have some growth, but the rest are shivering. Even my daffodils haven't started blooming, although I did have blooms on my Lenten roses for Easter, and they are still doing well.

Realized today that Periwinkle died from crown rot. I thought it was doing ok in a large pot but forgot I transplanted some fans of Double Sunset Glow to the same pot. That ones doing fine.

It looks like all of my losses were evergreen or semi-evergreen which makes sense. I've decided not to purchase any daylily that is evergreen. I think in order for them to do well I'd need more snow cover than I get. I still may try sevs because quite a few act as hard dormants for me.

On the positive side one fan of Confidante is struggling to survive. If our latest cold snap has finally broken it may actually survive!
