It's official. Aslan, Beautiful Edgings and Choral Fantasy are gone. This last cold snap did BE in. I'd be more upset but I only got BE because Julianna Lynn was sold out that year from my preferred vendors. But last year I got JL from an ATP member and it came up just fine!

On the fence are After the Fall, Mineral Springs, Moonlight Mist and Wild Cherry Round Up. No obvious growth but feeling around this morning no mushy crowns.

Ebony Circle, Confidante and Hampshire Hoyden all seem to have survived by 1 fan. A lot of my SEV daylilies look awful. I need to fertilize them to help them rebound. I was waiting for the weather to finally warm up for good and I think that has finally happened. Crossing Fingers!

Thanks Larry but I guess they just weren't meant to be. I'm not going to replace them because I've tried that before and it hasn't worked for me. I have too little space as it is so anything that is too fussy can go. I'm seriously considering getting rid of many of my cultivars that are struggling. They'd probably do just fine someplace warmer or snow-covered all winter.

I lost Princess Diana. It was a strapping big set of fans, in its original pot, waiting for spring beds to plant it in. The other 60 or so plants all came through it as far as I know. I'll be checking the others as they get moved to their permanent home. Sighing!

I'm pretty sure my 'Wild Irish' is gone. The roots are there, but they aren't in the best of condition and there's no green growth at all. It was a freeby bonus plant, but it was one I was really looking forward to for a couple of reasons. Still keeping my fingers crossed on it, but I might have to call it soon on that one. 'Shirley Temple Curls' is still struggling, too, holding on by just a single wimpy fan; although I can't be 100% sure it's STC since it didn't bloom for me or the gardener who had it before me.

I might have lost Bullfrog Kisses. Thought I lost it last year, then partway through the summer it threw up some leaves - never bloomed. I will leave the area empty, perhaps it will do the same this year. But it doesn't do me any good if it doesn't bloom.....

Hmmm...BK does pretty well here. Years where it was really really cold it was very late to come up but eventually bloomed.

Little Mucha Minto is looking mighty sad. We had a mild winter with not much snow cover so I hope I'm not going to loose it. We are getting warmer weather now so the next few days ought to tell whether or not it is going to make it.

Finally was able to get out and see what was lost. A Day in Paradise, Can't Fault Ya, Cherry Chapeau (second time), and Tim Herrington rotted in the pot.
High Falootin Floozie didn't grow last has fans this year.
Plan to replace but not this year.

After fertilizing my plants last week with Milorganite I went out today to see if they have greened up yet. Most look very happy but I think I lost Tattersall to crown rot. I'm not sure how or why this is happening. It's been quite dry but we have had some temperature swings although I didn't think we'd gone below freezing. A couple of others also have a few fans that I might lose but not the whole plant.

The weather is nice today so I may move some sad-looking daylilies around to try and get them back on track. I may also lift a few that appear to have sunk. That rarely happens to me. Usually I have to add more dirt because they have lifted up.

I would be interested to read some comments on the how and why of crown rot. I lost one last summer and I'm sure that was the cause. At first it appeared there were healthy fans left and I removed and re-potted them in new soil, but they rotted as well. Smell was like Erwinia bacterial rot in iris with the same soft, mushy plant material. I didn't treat the salvaged fans and I should have, I think.

Since I never pay much for daylilies I'm not going to bother treating them. I only want the hardiest ones in the garden anyway.

It really makes no sense to me since it was in a large pot with Lavender Deal and that one is doing just fine.

So far I haven't lost a single seedling Crossing Fingers! so my plan is to plant seeds from all the ones I lost. Hopefully the kids will be hardier than the parents.

I just want to thank everyone who advised me to be patient with my no-show daylilies. I'm happy to report that Ebony Circle now has 5 fans, Confidante has 2 fans and so does Hampshire Hoyden! Also, I found a fan for After the Fall which I am thrilled about! I still have several with no signs of life but we just had 2 weeks of cloudy, rainy weather. Now that the sun is out again I'm hoping some will make an appearance soon!

Most of my plants are looking better after being fertilized. A couple will need transplanting from pots soon. I also need to pot up some wintersown seedlings. I did lose my first seedling but that was due to squirrels.

I've often wondered if the genetics of some cultivars just produce weaker plants or don't handle stress (such as drought, extremely cold Winters, etc.) well at all. Some cultivars grow literally like weeds, while others seem like they must be babied and coaxed.
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us.
