This year chipmunks have started to dig out my semps in a tufa pot and in the ground. They are also digging out and eating my Fritillaria and Crocus bulbs. I have tried sprinkling blood meal and cayenne pepper without much success. Some advice anyone?

Chipmunks are such destructive little creatures. Where your Fritillaria and Crocus bulbs are you can put down chicken wire. The bulbs will come up through the holes in the but the chipmunks don't like to try and dig in it. You can even place mulch over it. This will usually deter cats from using it as a little box area.

Another thing that some are using with very good success is Irish Spring bar soap. You can make shavings of it and place it around the areas the chipmunks are causing problems in.

Here are a couple of links. Hope some thing here helps. Would love to know what ends up working for you. It could help others with the same problem. : )

I have also seen chipmunk bait/poison for sale. Not sure if you want to get that extreme, but it is available if you need to use it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. No, I don't want to use poison. They say if there is a void in nature someone new will soon fill it. I'll try the Irish Spring bar soap and also invite the coyotes and hawks to come and have dinner. Smiling

Have problems with groundhogs here and no good solutions so far. When one of these terrorists moves in, there is not a lot you can do except try to trap them and they are very difficult to trap.

I'm afraid to even go out and look this morning. I notice one of my hostas is gone, and there is a hole where it used to be. Not a good sign. Crying

That is funny!

I collect bird cages (I even have HH looking now!) and take the bottom off them and use those for protection from above ground varmints like chipmunks and mice (make sure you get the ones with small spaced bars, or put hardware cloth around the lower part).

I've also got pocket gophers this year - they ate all my garlic during the winter! I got maybe three that made it. I don't know what to do about those, except get a Jack Russel terrier!

They do make gopher traps, but I have never tried them. Not much of a problem for me.

The cat and RT used to take care of the gopher population. We rarely had problems. The RT that was a real hunting machine left us just before her 17th birthday and Susie the cat is 16 this last spring and just seems to eat and sleep. She will follow me around the yard if I'm out there.

I just can't think of having a third dog. Crying
And don't think Suzie would take kindly to another cat coming to live here.
Nikki is really good at chasing things off, but doesn't have the killer instinct unless it bites her when she goes to sniff it. Then all bets are off. She prefers the fun of the chase with Bill. I think they have an agreement to keep it a game. Rolling my eyes.
