What a gorgeous bud, LG. Can I ask where you get this beautiful tree peony?

Amanda, your white TP is so gorgeous! Do the blooms last long for you? I am glad your yellow TP has a nice fragrance.

Your white tree peony is spectacular, Yan. I really love it! How long do your blooms last, from open bud to petals drop?

My white one is still going strong and looks like it opened yesterday still. Tonight if the rains hit like it's supposed to then it will pretty much be done for. Yellow one still going strong too. My columbine pretty much have both the yellow plants buried and I need to move them behind the peonies but that's an easy fix and I'll get it later this week.

Chinese TP "Ao yang" bloom for the first time, buds got damaged by cold temperatures, only one bud make it to bloom.

Most of my Chinese TPs didn't make it through the cold spring.

So do you think the Japanese or American tree peonies are hardier?

Mary, tell you the truth, I don't know. But in China growers always suggests Chinese variety for more northern area, Japanese variety for southern areas ( not like zone 8 south). Probably Japanese TP can handle more humidity.
With American variety I had no clue, I only have 2 of them, I think that the Rockii variety is the most hardy one out of all four.
P.s is not like the Chinese variety not hardy, but they are the earliest one to bloom, so in early spring we still have cold weather, and then it got bud blast from freeze, and this is the first year I had experience some thing like this year.

I know Solaris Farms are working hard hybridizing for cold tolerance in tree peonies. It is an issue. More protected areas in colder climates are optimal. Since I love them so much, I have them all over around here. Some fair better than others, of course. Overall, as long as they have some winter mulch.,, they all do pretty well here in zone 5. It can get pretty cold here.

Have buds on two of my tree peony seedlings. Finally! One plant has two buds, the other one has one bud. Several won't bloom, but this gives me high hopes for next year. They are finally coming along.

Here are a couple pics of one of them. Flowers carriage is on top of the plant, which is a good thing.

Thanks Yan. I am thinking that I need to protect my TP in the winter and spring, not so much to keep them alive but to protect the newly bursting leaves and buds. Like yours, they get blasted and while it doesn't seem to kill the plant, it seriously sets them back and prohibits blooms. My little TP is really sprouting after a less than great start last year and this, so I will protect it well this fall. I think I will dig a little trench around the base out about 12-14" and sink a wire 'fence' to keep out the mice although I hear they tunnel through the snow not the dirt, so many the fencing should go around the plant and over the top. Yup. That sounds about right. Little ^&%$&^%* tunneled in several years ago and made happy homes in the burlap cages of my two lovely trees and dined on them all winter. Still a little bitter about that. They never came back. Just that one year. Well, we have them but I am really assiduous about setting traps and a neighbor moved in with two cats which I welcome in my yard for obvious reasons. Rolling on the floor laughing

So wonderful, Tracey! Can't wait to see blooms from your TP seedlings! Hope they will all make it to bloom.

So sorry that you have a problem with mice Mary. Neighborhood cats prowling in my yard seem to take care of mice and voles problem. My sister likes to bury shrimp, lobster, and crab shells under her fruit trees. These fishy smelling things attract a number of cats to the yard. The only negative thing about this is these cats brought tons of wild weedy catmint all over the backyard. Sighing!
