Lucy if you click on the misspelled word with the right side of your mouse, you will get a list of possible words, below that there should be a choice to "add to your dictionary" or also you should be able to select "Ignore" and it won't change it.

Dave - did you mean de-acidify the soil? Moss likes acidic soil.

Well, OK... I like the humorous answers better than the boring answer.

A Hula Hoe is also called a scuffle hoe or stirrup hoe, and is a quick way to destroy small weeds. You can scrape the soil backwards or forward over the weeds.
That's why they call it a hula hoe- it's the back and forth motion..

Tossed moss out of a couple barrels this afternoon.

I will remember to right click next time it turns up.

I just lightly hula hoe it up before it gets too thick. If it were getting in between Iris here, I would think that there wasn't enough light. We stay pretty dry through the summer.

The iris patches that have the moss get FULL sun. I do think the soil is super-acidic from the pine trees.

Sue - yes, the pines will definitely make the soil around them acidic. I get moss in almost full sun too. Between our clay soil and the pines, the yard stays pretty acidic. I need to spread lime every year on the grass or it gets large patches of moss.

Yes, soil must be de-acidified using ground limestone, not lime from a cement company. Takes longer to work, but safer and better for the soil and the plants. Moss will slowly give up, or could be scraped up, and less will come back once not so acid.

Used the scuffle hoe to get those small weeds uprooted without bending down today prior to our expected rain of 1/3 inch, if it arrives. This hoe has a 5-6' handle so stay standing, and triangle shape so all sides are functional. Maybe the hoe did a hula with its back and forth motion, but I surely did not.

I have used the "Hula Hoe" for years, but they were called an "Acton Hoe" or at least that's the brand name of the ones I like. There are others.

No weeds found today so it must work well!

Only moss found in back "lawn" area where water sits because of builder failing to slope yard properly, so a rented back hoe, bobcat or something will fix it after I get it marked out. Certainly not doing that job by hand. The little that was in new iris area last season is all dried up; I had hoed it up and just left it on top of the soil and put down a light application of ground limestone.

Oh...I bet last fall I put the wrong lime on the moss. It was just some that was in the shed. I see Fleet Farm has what they call Pulverized Lime. It was in the garden section so it should be what I need.

Pulverized lime is often bagged as garden lime too. That is the stuff to use.
