FREE Hosta seeds available!
Canada only, please and first come, first served.

I have finally had a chance to go through all my seeds and I've got lots available. All of my hosta are open pollinated, meaning I know the pod parent but not the pollen parent.

They are all labelled with the name of the pod parent. Hosta seeds do not come true to the parent and may be plain ordinary green plants regardless of parentage, but they are likely to show some characteristics of the parent in regard to colour, size, petiole colour, or leaf shape. Have fun growing them.

The seeds I have available and approximate number of packages are listed below. If you are interested in any of them, please PRIVATE MESSAGE me with what you would like. I’ll send you my address and I will expect to receive a SASE from you (preferably #10 envelope).

See below for updated list.

Hi Viola,

I would be interested in your seeds. I just bought a new home and everything has been so neglected, love hostas - they would be such a beautiful addition to my garden. Anything you still have?
Thank you

Hi,

Where are you located? I'm not sure what I'll have this year as I didn't save as much seed, but looking at it was on my ToDo list this afternoon.

If you are new here, are you fully aware that hosta seeds do not come true to the parent plant? The vast majority will be plain Jane greenies and hostas started from seed will take 4-5 years to mature as well. I don't want to discourage you as you can get some nice surprises, but you should be prepared to cull mercilessly. If you are still interested, I'll let you know what I might have extra this year.

Good for the prod to get me to go through my seeds and start what I want to start this year.

This is what I have to share. All envelopes have at least 10 seeds and most have more. No guarantees of viability, though most looked like good seeds.

'Bell Ringer' - 3 I had some nice seedlings from this plant a couple of years ago.
'Charlotte's Web' - 2 - potential for streakers though much of my plant has stabilized
'Deja Blu' - 1 - I have one lovely blue seedling from this plant.
Thumb of 2018-02-04/ViolaAnn/b34fea (2010 seedling from 'Deja Blu'. Photo taken July 19, 2017).

'Gemini Moon - 2
'Ice Age Trail' - 2 - potential for streakers. I divided out the solid blue part of my plant last year; so all seeds came from streaked parts.
'Lakeside Zinger' - 2 - I have a weedling which is almost certainly from this parent. It's a very small plant with tough leaves and one section of it has a white streak.
Thumb of 2018-02-04/ViolaAnn/f6a55a - That weedling, July 19

'Purple Heart' - 2 - I have a couple of small seedlings from this plant, one of which shows good potential.
Thumb of 2018-02-04/ViolaAnn/2f31b7 (2016 seedling from 'Purple Heart'. Photo Aug. 5, 2017).
'Salute' 1 - another which has given me some nice blue or blue-green, upright seedlings.
Thumb of 2018-02-04/ViolaAnn/10bd22 (2012 seedling from 'Salute'. Photo mid-August 2017).

'Spilt Milk' - 4 - I have two interesting seedlings from 'Spilt Milk'. One is variegated and the other is very misty.
Thumb of 2018-02-04/ViolaAnn/100f29 (2013 seedling from 'Spilt MIlk'. I divided it early in the season to share this season with family. Photo mid-July 2017).
Thumb of 2018-02-04/ViolaAnn/a81872 (2016 misty seedling from 'Spilt Milk'. Photo mid-August 2017).
'Sun Power' - 1
Lakeside Cranberry Relish - 3 - I've had seedlings from this one but have not kept them.
Seedling of 'Curly Fries' - 1 - Second generation as these are from a 2016 seedling that decided to bloom last summer. Here's the mom.

BTW, I start them folded into moist coffee filters enclosed in zip-lok bags. To start 10 or so at a time, it can be a very little bag. I use coffee filters because they seem a bit less porous than paper towels and the little roots are less likely to get entangled in them.

I put them up on top of my fridge for a couple of weeks. Then I look at them and carefully transfer (using tweezers) those that have germinated into soil in small containers - cut-off styrofoam cups work well as would individual yogurt cups with holes punched in the bottom. I've had better success with germination that way than in soil because they stay evenly moist in the zip-lok bags. At that point they go under lights. You can put 4-5 little seedlings in one cup of soil and pot them up later in spring. I get them outside as soon as it's warm enough, but not into light that's too bright at first.

All hosta seeds for 2018 are gone. I may collect a few more during the coming season, but likely not as many.

Hi,

I don't have any left from 2017. Might have some after the 2018 season. Good luck with your new gardens.

Where are you located? I'm not sure what I'll have this year. It was a weird spring and some of the hostas are stunted and some didn't have as many blooms as usual.

Cheryl - are you, by chance, the person from the Ontario Hosta Group on FB who is already sending me an envelope?

Hi ViolaAnn,

Happy New Year from Montreal! I'm dreaming of nice weather and gardening and wondered if you could reserve some Hosta seed for me if you still have any available. Please let me know where to send my SASE.

Thank you!

Hi Lorraine,

After I've had lunch, I'll take stock of what I have available. I'm sure there are some in the freezer from 2020 or 2019 too. LOST in the freezer. I need to look for them. Ha! I collected from far fewer plants in 2021 and mostly plant that I felt were quite likely to give me good seedlings. As a result I have fewer remaining, but a few people didn't send me their envelopes and at this point, I'll give those seeds to anyone interested.

Hi again,

I have searched my freezers, both fridge and chest and while I've certainly found some "interesting" things, I've not found the hosta seeds I was convinced were there. Perhaps I pulled them out awhile ago. The last almost 2 years has been a bit of a blur.

But I DO have the following, all 2021 seeds and all OP. Packets are not huge.
'Almost' - 1
'Atom Smasher' - 4 I don't have seedlings from this one but note it's listed in the parentage of a number of nice cultivars.
'Cherry Tart' - 1
'Electrocution' - 1 I have one lovely blue seedling from this with the same electrified look.
'Emerald Ruff Cut' - 2 I have two seedlings with nice ruffled leaves. One is yellow, the other green.
'First Blush' - 1
'Lakeside Cranberry Relish' - 1
'Lakeside Zinger' - 2 I have a seedling from this one that will remain very small but has thick leaves with occasional flecks of white in them.
'Last Dance' - 1 I have one mature seedling from this that beat the odds and is a reverse variegation.
'Purple Heart' - 4 I've had several seedlings from this that have lovely red/purple petioles and flower scapes.
'Purple Heart' seedling - 1
'Quarter Note' - 4
'September Sun' - 3 I've got a nice solid yellow seedling from this one.
'Summer Breeze' - 7 My seedlings have been solid green, but friends have told me they had some interesting ones from this one.
Ann
