I am thankful that today DH is trimming the wisteria on the garage roof, something I couldn't do because I'm afraid of ladders.

I am so thankful I finally cut my hair. Hurray!

I have thick, curly hair that was down to my waist and had to braid it every morning. Since I don't blow dry my hair, it took hours and hours for it to dry during the winter months.

I had it cut off to about shoulder length with the plan to just wear it up in a pony tail. The gal truly under estimated how much my hair curls. I can barely get it up into a tail. I kind of look like a poodle ... Whistling , but I love it. My hair now drys in less than an hour during winter and no braiding. Thumbs up

Mine used to be almost waist-length, but straight. Felt a whole bunch better getting that weight off my head when I had it cut shoulder-length. Then I spent years and many, many dollars getting it to BE curly. Hilarious!

Hilarious! Hilarious!

I have never bothered trying to get my hair straight ... most people always want the kind of hair they don't have. I didn't care if it was curly or straight, it was hidden by the braid.

Oh, but it is bliss not to have to walk around with wet hair for hours during the winter months.

My whole kitchen is cold until mid-afternoon during the winter months, unless I am using the oven. The kitchen and the laundry room face away from the fire place insert, so they don't get warm until my fire has been going for several hours ... Whistling

This morning I pulled out my back-up bottle of dish soap that was stored in the cabinet under the kitchen sink. The soap was frozen ! The bottle is now sitting near the fireplace so that it can thaw and I can wash dishes ... Rolling my eyes.

It's always something.

That's cold, Lyn. I really like Weaverville. We used to live in Redding but I don't think it ever got quite that cold. We did have frozen pipes in the garage once when the Polar Express came down from the north.

Carol ... we have had a couple of weeks of night temps down to around 20F and day temps in the mid 30s, but it is warming up, as usual in January. Night temps are now in the mid-to-hi 30s and day temps are in the 40s. Amazing how 10 degrees makes such a difference.

The back of the kitchen cabinet faces an outside wall, so I think the dish soap probably froze last week and just had not thawed out, yet.

Nah ... you are not that dim-whited, Ken and neither am I ... Whistling I don't spend much time in the kitchen when it is that cold without cooking something in the oven. The rest of the house can be quite toasty after the fire has been going for a while. Since there is no thermostat on the wood stove, there are times when I find myself peeling off layers and opening doors and windows to cool off ... Big Grin

When I lived overseas so many years ago, I got chilblains one winter...should have had thermals and warm socks on or something. Also, we had bedbugs. But frozen stuff in the kitchen! Oh no, couldn't handle that! Not. It didn't even get that cold the year of the ice storm/power outage out here!

Linda ....

There was a very good reason the pioneers had large kitchens where everyone congregated. That was the room where the wood stove was generally located ... Big Grin

In my house, I have what is called a fireplace insert, which operates as a wood stove, but it is located in the living room ... Grumbling and the kitchen is located at the back of the house furthest away from the heat from the stove, so it does get cold.

By afternoon, the heat has traveled to that part of the house and the kitchen truly is quite comfortable. However, I can compensate by putting a roast in the morning to slow roast during the day and that warms the kitchen earlier. Or I can make up something the night before and pop it in the oven and that warms the room.

I agree with you, working in a cold kitchen would be a horror. I am not about to suffer through that kind of think. If all else fails, I'll cook something that I can put in the freezer for a future meal.

My kitchen is fairly small, so it doesn't take long to heat up when I use the oven ... Smiling

At least, I don't have to haul water or wash clothing in a creek. I didn't step back that far in time.

NorCal can be very cold at times. Even in the lower elevations.

We have a light covering of snow this morning. I'm so not a fan of winter but I am thankful that the roads and paved surfaces are clear. Thumbs up

Most people think of California that way, but it is a BIG state and has all 11 climate zones. It's just that there is a bigger population in the southern portion of the state with a lot more gardeners, so you hear more about their climates.

I live in the mountains in the northern part of the state in Trinity County. Actually, at my elevation, it's a lot warmer with less snow than if you go higher up the mountains.

I couldn't sleep much last night, so I ended up putting more wood on my night fire. I am thankful for a warm kitchen this morning.
