Frilly said that she was using the Avast antivirus program on her computer in an earlier post so I assumed that she would know what I meant when I said "Avast." I included a link on how to reboot into safe mode for her operating system. It may sound intimidating but it's pretty easy in reality. No need to fear! Smiling

The reason that I asked about running a scan while in safe mode is that most antivirus software seems to be more effective at finding the malware when in safe mode. I've had instances where my antivirus software didn't find a problem when I ran a scan while in normal mode. However, after booting into safe mode and running the same scan with the same antivirus software, it would find the malware that was causing the problem.

Ok well I tried running a scan using Avast and it said I had some programs to update and that was it. Nothing about a virus or anything. (Something about I-tunes (my dd uses that) and also something wrong with Acrobat or something. Said it couldn't fix it whatever it was-incompatable updates or something.)

I tried doing it is safemode using the instructions above and I got this message --
This App cant open, Get Started can't be opened using the Built-In Administrator account. Sign in with a different account and try again.

I also had no internet connection. I have no idea why. Obviously I have it now. And before.

My computer keeps trying to get me to ugrade to Windows 10....for free, whatever. I did that 3 months ago. My quick books wouldn't work properly (so ould need to pay for an upgrade) the system wouldn't show me PDF files and lord knows what else was wrong. I uninstalled 10 and came back to 7. In the process I lost all my email history.

Decided there isn't anything wrong with my computer and 7. If it ain't broke don;t break it.

Normal safe mode doesn't have networking and that includes internet connection. If you need internet while in safe mode, you have to boot into, "Safe mode with Networking" (directions in same link as before.) However, if you add internet connection when your antivirus isn't running, that doesn't seem very safe to me so I'd avoid that unless necessary somehow.

I did some googling and found posts on the Avast forums that said that some versions of Avast won't run in safe mode. Instead, you can run a boot-time scan (which they claimed was even better.)

I don't have Windows 10 or Avast so I can't test anything out for you. I would if I could.
Also, I'm not an expert with computers so my knowledge is limited. I wish that I knew more to help out. Smiling

You might try that F-secure link that comes up in the facebook link you mentioned further up thread. F-secure is a decent company and several years ago I did use them to help get rid of an invader of some sort, but it's been quite a while back and I don't remember details. The link shows a "clean your PC for free" option that might be worth a try.

I see people complain about Windows 10 here quite a bit, but I must be a severe exception...not only did my upgrade go well, but my computer runs better than it ever did while using Win 7. Not one program refused to work. Going back to Win 7, for me, would be almost like going all the way back to Win 98.

Ok I did the boot-time scan and there was nothing found. And it did take forever, I covered it with a towel over night (in my bedroom) because it was still running when I turned in. I will just need to use it for a while and see if I see any change. Shrug!
