One more...because it only makes sense here.
Zuzu thanks for the reassurance on Hortico delivery. I wouldn't have been able to plant last week anyway because of the stormy weather.
A friend went to Lowes and her clerk rang her tree rose as a tree without any suggestions from her! They are getting a new shipment today and needed the roses without blooms to go away!
Lyn--weird thing--the storm took out a huge healthy tree but left other weaker trees. Most of the garden looks untouched. We think it was some sort of downburst. I see trees in the area around me that are healthy that are snapped off in the middle, while long dead ones that should fall any day are still standing. My chairs that usually blow in 30 mph winds never moved, same with empty pots I left out! My husband and I are experienced at tree work, so we'll take care of it all ourselves. The petty part of me wishes our neighbors would get a bid on their tree work just once so they realize the thousands of dollars we have saved them when we take out their trees out of neighborliness. It's sure a handy skill to have, and good equipment to own since the storms keep getting more severe each year.

We lost some big healthy trees in the wind recently too. I think, here, that the reason is that they are so full of water - heavy and leafy - that they are easy targets.

The investment made in being a good neighbor is never a poor investment, even if it only feeds your soul.

As for nature taking out healthy trees and leaving dead trees, I can't even begin to explain that one.

This is really getting weird. Today, another huge branch fell off that same tree! There's not much wind today, so it must have been damaged the other night. I understand it when waterlogged cottonwoods just fall over. These are branches up high in the tree, and in one of the trees, it was half the tree where it forked low. It wasn't a weak fork, either. The trunk was solid. Wonder how bad it would have been if the trees had been completely leafed out? I don't see any signs of a lightning hit. We have another cottonwood close to the house that was hit 2 years ago, and we knew exactly when that happened. Bark flew off in every direction.
