Does anyone have any experience growing Leycesteria formosa aka Himalayan Honeysuckle?

I found the golden leaved form at a local nursery and bought it. However, I'm considering returning it for a couple of reasons.

The fact that it is from the Himalayas makes me wonder if it will withstand the heat here.

Conversely, the fact that it has become invasive in the UK and Australia concerns me. I don't want to release a menace. It makes berries that are relished by birds so it could spread easily and widely via them.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or experience?

Thanks much! Smiling

There is a nice one where I work in Seattle, planted near the entry I use, I has been there for many years. I I really like the flowers and the berries, so much that I bought seeds for the golden leaved cultivar, and swiped some seeds from the shrub I like too. In that location, it is a nice shrub about 5 feet tall, seems to stay about that size. I don't see suckers or volunteers nearby, in fact it seems to be a very mannerly shrub. Of course, Seattle is very different from Georgia. I just looked it up in the USDA Plants Database, it has become naturalized in California but no other states in the U.S. I would say it has had a sufficient chance to become invasive, and does not seem to be on any watch lists for Georgia, so if it was me I would give it a try.

Thanks much, Mary! Big Grin
I'm still trying to decide but I won't be able to get back to the nursery until next week so it has another week to impress me into keeping it. Hilarious!
