This is the first year I've grown Moonflower from seed. Just thought I'd share a couple photos, because the way they germinated was surprising! They are growing in two stages at the moment.

The seed's shell stays on, for quite a while, until the leaves will fully open (I originally wondered if I had planted the seeds in the wrong direction):

The bottom leaves on the left and the right have lots of small holes from the original shell, while the new leaves are smooth. This plant is about a month old and will be the one staying inside:

Thanks, Jolana. I have 12 moonflower and 39 morning glories growing from seed. Oddly enough, I left a few that didn't germinate with the others, and they are just slowly coming up. It's going to be fun planting all of them this year!

Yes, plants are amazing!

This will be the second year without them but we are trying to get ready to move next spring and the place I want to plant them is full of ivy that has been growing (taking over) for decades, lol
I can't wait to see pix of yours

Hmmm, wonder if it's too late to start a couple of moonflowers here...
I am SO behind this year! But I do have three varieties of I. nils going. Smiling

Heh, we'll see just how long those seeds keep, then. I'm rather surprised, tho, with the Star of India seeds I started. They're rather old; I know I've had them since well before Cubits started, let alone ATP (well, ok, NGA). 100% germination.

I just put a few Moonflower seeds in to soak. I'm going to use the paper towel method with them, so I'll know within a few days if the seeds are still good.

Jane, your seedlings look great! And I don't think it's too late to start. They grow pretty fast.

Yesterday, I checked on the little guys, and thought, I'll water today and put these last two in a pot with a moonflower and keep them inside as long as I can. They were still on the bamboo skewers yesterday. Not this morning! Heavenly Blue is on the left and Grandpa Ott. I like how Ott twirls up the skewer and the blue is like "I want your skewer too..."

Wow, the combination of colors would be lovely!
I need to try to get a Cardinal Climber started to plant in with the dark blue I. nil I put in a pot yesterday. The different types of foliage look really nice together. Had that happen by accident a few years ago and I've been wanting to do it deliberately ever since. Smiling

Mind are doing great! I really need to plant them and give them something to climb on. I've already had to unwind them from their neighbors twice! They were kind of comatose until the nights got into the 60's and they also got fed last week .. that certainly woke them up!

Last frost date? Here, with the weather we've been having? Lord only knows. When we first moved here 16 years ago, I didn't dare set anything outside before the first week of June. Last year and the year before, I put plants out in mid-May. Actually the USDA changed our zone to 6a a couple of years ago. Maybe they're right after all. Shrug! All I know for sure is that the wasps have gotten an early start this year, forcing me and my seedlings out of the greenhouse about a week ago. That's a full month earlier than usual (if you have wasps in your area, never, but NEVER get a wood frame greenhouse!)
