I appreciate it. There might be legitimate reasons for selling an unrecognizable variety, and then I'll know to be a little less cynical.

I have not received any answer from Burpees yet. I doubt they are going to email me back. My friend isn't interested anymore either. I didn't know but he told me that he saved seeds from his corn last year. He is going to grow them and see what they do. Thanks!

Burpee - typical! But thank you for trying. I was about to look for the technical source that oists ALL "recognized" cultivar names to see if it is a recognized name. Catalog of Life?

But it's great that your friend saves seeds and is going to try them.

Of course, if its a hybrid, he'll have some variety, but then he can save seed from the stalks that taste best.

IF it was a Burpee product and it was purchased at Walmart it was Ruby Queen.
There is another called Ruby Jewel but as with Ruby Queen this corn genetically is owned by the seed company that developed it.
There are tests that can determine is a corn is just another corn repackaged.
These test have been used successfully by seed companies to sue, and win, in court where farmers simply saved the seed without paying the company for using their seed.
These seeds are patented and if Walmart or anyone did that and got caught the courts have handed out very stiff fines.

RpR, The seeds bought at Wal-mart were only $3.00 per pack. Burpees sells there seeds for $6.00 per pack. If the seeds are the same why the price difference?

That is how Walmart got as big as they are.

They buy in BULK.

I bought some corn seed at Menard's and their price was reduced from what the packet price was.
Buy in bulk, you get huge discounts, which is how major chains defeat small independent stores as they can then set the profit margin at what ever level they want.
If you wish put -- red sweet corn seed -- into your search engine and you will find what is out there at the moment.
If you search far enough there is information, often, of a seeds history.

It could be a deal Burpee set-up to clear out old seed stock but for any company to risk illegally selling another/s seed, is simply not worth the risk.

Thanks for letting me know. I can believe that it was old seed stock. Makes sense to me. Thanks again!
