Hello!

I have 2 tangerine trees in my backyard I planted a year ago. When I looked at them today, there were a LOT of flowers on both trees. Here is a picture:

My question is, will each flower be a fruit?

Second, if the first is true, do I need to trim it? the trees pretty small and I don't think it could support a LOT of fruit.

Thanks!

Each fertilized flower can yield a fruit. It would probably help the health of the tree if you thin the fruits once they are set to yield a realistic number.

I'm amazed that citrus can survive there! Did you cover or protect it in any way during the winter? I've had them freeze in my yard in Phoenix, AZ.

Hello!

Actually, I didn't even know it was a type of citrus, so I didn't even cover them in winter. Interesting. Anyway, thanks for the tip. Its a shame I might be moving, though, I really loved planting these trees. Might as well leave them for the next people to live here! They might love them.

You must have a had a pretty mild winter. It looks very happy with all of those blossoms! Darn, I hope you don't have to move before you can try a tangerine!
Actually, are you sure that is a tangerine tree? I got to thinking my tangerine blossoms were white. These look very pink in your photot.

I've never seen a Tangerine tree with pink flowers ... very pretty but they sure look a lot like the flowers of Prunus to me.

Hello!

I bought both the trees as well as 2 apples, 2 plums, and 2 cherrys at Costco for $11.00 each. The ones I bought, (The ones in the picture,) were marked as Tangerines. I will do some research and see if it is a tangerine tree.

Actually, my winter, on a scale of 1 to 10, with one being no snow and ten being what happened in 2008, (3 feet,) this winter was a 6. About a foot of snow was the most we had.

I might not be moving, we wont figure out until May - June.

I will post pictures when fruit grows.

Thanks!

I got a close up of a flower, if that helps.

I do think that bloom is for a Prunus sp. (Plum or Cherry).

If you look on Google Images using the keyword 'tangerine blossoms' you will see there is a huge difference. I think @plantladylin is correct and your tree is a plum or cherry. Hope it makes some lovely fruit for you. Thumbs up

That would make more sense since the rest of them can take more cold than the citrus.

There is someone in Idaho who is successfully growing citrus but he does it indoors with the help of geothermal...
Well, here, read about it. It is very interesting. Thumbs up

There are a couple citrus that will survive in your area but you wouldn't want to eat them.

That is Prunus: probably a peach or nectarine. Cherries leaf out then bloom.

Could that have been a nectarine? Citrus has just about 0% chance in Idaho.

Hello!

I apologize for the confusion. I meant Nectarine, not Tangerine. I looked up an image and it matches. Coppice is right. Sorry for the confusion.

It's no biggie, Jared. We have all made mistakes and the important thing is to learn the correct ID. Quite often the plant tags are in error, too. I hope you can stay long enough to enjoy your necterines!

Necterines will also do better if you cull some of the fruit - especially the first year. I hope you get to enjoy your fruit whatever it turns out to be.

We have lots of Nectarine listings in the database: http://garden.org/plants/searc... and I thought that bloom looked more like Prunus sp. I hope you get lots of delicious Nectarines from your lovely tree!
