I'm going to try a few 20 gal fabric pots with tomatoes this year. I've never used fabric pots so don't know what they should reside in/on .... placed on the soil surface, in a saucer, on bricks, wood, or?

I have very hot summers with occasional downpours of rain but everything has to be watered daily once it turns hot unless we have a thunderstorm (which usually gives me a day off from watering). :-)

My thanks for your opinions or advice.

This will be my first year using fabric pots - planting potatoes. From what I've seen, you can set them on the driveway, on bare dirt, stones, etc. I'm not sure about setting them on grass since it would probably die off. I would not set them in saucers unless you empty the saucers after watering - might be like gardening in a bog. Setting them on a wood deck or patio might not be good either with moisture on the wood for a prolonged period. I'm sure someone much more knowledgeable will come along.

I place mine right on the surface of my garden beds. I've have some fabric pots that are easily 5-6 years old and still in great shape. I agree with Cindy that they might smother grass, or collect too much moisture in saucers.

I've used a grow bag and burlap bag for potatoes, just leaned up against fence and plopped on ground.
