Thanks, Rita, for the vote of confidence. If I find Big Boy I'll still buy it though I have two more young tomato plants (purchased) downstairs, under lights.

The Bush Goliath you had originally considered might be a very good one to grow but I just don't know never having grown it.

I'm content with one giant plant for now. By November I'll have many giant tomatoes.

Bush Goliath was developed for container gardening. Small determinate compact plant. Larger fruit in the 6-8 ounce class but otherwise similar to to the Patio tomato. As container types go it is pretty good.

Big Boy hit 8' here last year! Good thing I had that boy by the big rose trellis! This photo was taken 7/20 and was far from done growing.

@farmerdill - I saw that and then voted against it when I found Better Boy.

Yup those Big Boys can grow tall!!

Last year I had Patio Tomatoes in containers. They did really well, plants stayed small and had good production. This year not doing any Patio or other container types. Not doing any potted tomatoes at all as I would have to buy plants. Not planning on buying and tomato plants this year.

Thanks for alerting me to the "bush" varieties. I had been investigating the Dwarf Tomato Project varieties for containers but had not realized that the "bush" tomatoes were also suited for planting in pots. A quick web survey found several possibilities for growing from seed. (I agree that $15 per plant is out of the question!)

Bush Early Girl (64day determinate 6-7oz) Burpee, Harris, TotallyTomato
Better Bush (68day indet. 8oz) Park, Bonnie, Tom.Growers, Bot.Int.,Reimer
Extreme Bush (50day det. 3oz) VictorySeed
Bush Goliath (68day det. 3-4") Tot.Tom., Reimer, Pinetree, HPSseed
SuperBush (72day det. 6oz) GrowOrganic
Bush Beefsteak (62day det. 8oz) Tot.Tom., Stokes, Tom.Fest, Reimer
Bush Champion II (65day det. 8-12oz) Tot.Tom., Burpee,Tom.Growr.
Czech's Bush (66day det. 4-8oz) SeedCo., Czechs-Bush seeds

All but the last are hybrid. Most reviews say these are productive varieties but disagree on taste--some say good, others bland. I guess I'll have to try them myself next year--too late for this season. I'm leaning toward Bush Goliath and Extreme Bush to start with, but am open to other suggestions. It will be interesting to see how they compare with the dwarf project varieties.

I grew Bush Beefsteak last year. I liked it. Lots of nice looking tomatoes and the taste was quite acceptable. I grew them in ground and the plants were average size so not sure how one might fit those big plants in a container. I would have needed much bigger pots than what I had.

I have grown Better Bush in a pot previously. It stayed small, did well and had decent production. The taste was pretty bland.

Bush Early Girl and Bush Champion II have already been planted here for this year. They were put in ground. We will see how they do, how big they get and what they taste like.
