Hi all.
A lady at church gave me an 18" long rose stem. The flower is yellow and smells so lovely.
Anyway, she said it broke off a bush and knowing I like plants, suggested I try and get it to root.
I trimmed the top, cutting off the flower and 4 buds. Cut it at an angle on the bottom and again cutting it in half, so I now have two stems.
I stuck them in a 6" pot, using potting soil. I then placed a cut, 2 litre bottle over the stems to create a greenhouse effect.
Am I doing this correctly? Should I do this some other way? I read somewhere to stick the stem in a potato. I have no experience with roses. And want to be successful with this project.
Any help is appreciated. TIA

@Reine I so hope you get new plants to grow. I just received a bouquet of roses and am wanting to do the same thing. Mine are noid florist roses, but really look like Amnesia rose, which I . Have checked out the leaf nodes and there appears to be growth.

@Azgarden New growth is a good sign.
I'm eager for some growth. They just got potted yesterday. How long did yours take?

@Reine I actually did not notice the growth at the leaf nodes until the roses were pretty spent. It was then I decided to cut off the blooms and the ends and remove the leaves. At that point they had been in just water for about a week, so I don't really know if the growth was already there or maybe happened during that week. Will be anxious to follow the progress of your cuttings. I've never attempted this so I am all ears!

bhart90 (Brenden) is also trying to root florist roses so there are three of you experimenting at the same time. Keep us posted on the results.

Well, I failed at rooting the 2 stems. I think the plastic bottle is the cause. Fungus started on one of the stems. I rinsed the stems, repotted them, but left them uncovered. Too late.

It can be tricky to get the moisture level just right. Perhaps your friend will give you the opportunity to try again.

Mine failed also I will try again. I so loved the color of the rose.

The bottle trick works great! You have to make sure your stem only has 1 or 2 leaves on it...you make a cross cut at bottom of stem and dip in root hormone..root hormone is the key!!! Here is a cutting that I rooted exactly how I explained it..the dead piece is the original cutting

Since the talk is rooting...so about two months ago I had some palms trimmed in my back yard..we had to move some rose containers out of the way..I went to move one and noticed roots had grown into the dirt from the container..well I had no choice but to rip them so I can move the rose bush..fast forward look at what has grown...(about face)
