I tried something new last night. I took some night photos of irises using the cameras flash as the only source of light.

I'll try to take a few more tonight.

Very nice Rob! See if your camera has the ability to control the intensity of your flash (look at your manual). Usually a lower intensity flash will give you good results with truer color and no "hot spots". Play around with it. Also, if you have a tripod for the camera, just a plain old flashlight will do a good job as well as it's more diffuse and try back lighting the subject as well.

Great tips and suggestions Anne!

I only have a simple point and shoot digital camera. My only choices are no flash, auto flash and flash on. I don't have a tripod, but I'll try some photos with a flashlight tonight.

I grow so many night blooming plants that over the years I've gotten pretty good at it with trial and error .. I've gotten to where I can capture the 'shimmer' without a color shift of some flowers .. also try backing up and shoot at different distances so your flash scatters a bit more.

I've learned the darker the colors the closer you want to be as they absorb the light and the lighter the colors reflect it.

The whites are difficult during the day, so I like how Battlestar Atlantis came out.

Thanks for the tips Anne.. I find the camera books a little intimidating, so it's nice to have bits of information that relates to what I'm trying to do.

Mosquitos are horrible out there tonight. Glare I'll try to take pictures tomorrow after applying bug spray.

I just took a few more shots and found some sleeping deer in my field. They broke the only stalk I had on Rarer than Rubies. Glare So I brought it inside and put it in a vase. The mosquitoes aren't bad at this time of night, but they are horrible at sundown.

I'm recharging the camera and I may go take a few more photos.
