I have a packet of seeds for Dichondra Silver Falls. I'm going to put them in a 13" hanging basket. There seems to be many opinions about how to plant these. Should I germinate them in a seed starter and transplant or can I sow them directly into my hanging basket? How many seeds should I put in a 13" basket for a nice cascade? Any specific advice for this seed/plant?

Welcome to NGA! Welcome!

Planting in pots and planting in the garden are two different animals. In the garden, the spacing would be about 18 inches apart. But to make a basket look nice, the plants have to be crowded - maybe 5 or 6 plants in a 13 inch pot. You can start them directly in your pot but in a 6-pack tray might be easier. If you put 2 - 3 seeds in each cell in a 6-pack and had 100% germination, you would have more than plenty. You can pinch out the less vigorous seedlings and keep the ones that show a lot of vitality or special leaf color.

Dichondra seed needs light to germinate. Place the seeds on the soil and press gently but don't bury them.

Thank you for the welcome.

So if I were to direct sow them in the baskets would I distribute 10-12 seeds evenly around or do clusters of 3-4 each in 5 or so little areas around the pot? I have 25 seeds so I could try both direct sow and seed starters I suppose.

I never start ALL my seed. Crop Failure! Arhhh! Grumbling

I would distribute them evenly around the pot and wait (im)patiently for them to sprout. I have been known to complain to Hubby, two hours after I planted seeds, that they had not sprouted. Smiling

You will know in a couple weeks....

@YBreaz Welcome to Garden.org. from fellow TX gardener! Just in case your Dichondra doesn't quite fill in, I just saw very full 6" pots at the Lowe's on Hwy 71 near Bee Cave Rd. this afternoon.

I know, @daisyl I have to deal with the greenhouse overflow this year to make sure I have space for everything next fall. Last winter it was so cramped in the GH I think the plants suffered. Good thing it was a mild winter and I was able to alleviate some of the cramped space by bringing some of the more hardy plants outside. Still. I lost a few precious ones simply because I couldn't see them to keep them watered. I'll take a little time off to take inventory about what really MUST go into the greenhouse, what will live in the house, and what can stay out will take a few seasons. Then I hope I can go back to having pretties like this dichondra Silver Falls, too.
