Cool! I just looked up info and apparently it takes years to produce one flower. I saw about 7 total in the area. Lucky day!! Thanks for the ID!

Great! I'll head there tomorrow for the photo.

Here's a different plant, It was near the trout lilies. This is just for fun since you are so good at ID. Know what it is??

It is too early for Cypripediums now in Ohio. Could they be Ramps?
I am surely way off....

Where are you located?? That looks like (what we on the left coast lovingly refer to as) Skunk Cabbage (Veratrum), a West coast native.

Daisy

I see you are more east than west. Weird.

Nice work! Everyone around here knows it as skunk cabbage, a type of false hellebore. I'm in the very northeast corner of OH. It grows in the woods and near ponds and will eventually get taller with white flowers at the top, just like the photos in Daisy's link. So because of your posts, I just went out and cut off a piece and it doesn't smell like skunk just from the cutting. Maybe one has to roll around in it to get a whiff? Rolling on the floor laughing

I think you have to crush the leaves to appreciate the smell. Smiling
