I know that folks have had success training wisteria to grow as a tree rather then just "taking over". Can someone tell me how to do this successfully?
Each cloud has a silver lineing if only you look for it.
My sister had a wisteria trained up a stout pole in the middle of her yard and I think she just kept pruning it to keep it within bounds. It did wonderfully and she is NOT a gardener. It flowered nicely and looked good.

Yes, all those wisteria 'trees' have a support system underneath. If you build something, use metal pipe - wisteria get really heavy.

We have two here and it is just a mater of giving them a support in the beginning and depending on how well it develops after many years of hard pruning the support can come out. It is lots of work to keep them constantly pruned. They naturally want to vine out. You'll need to pick a variety that blooms before the foliage appears or the foliage will hide all the flowers. We made that mistake with one of ours and i'm in the process of trying to rework the from so the foliage is above head height but I'm not sure this will be effective. The one below is Chinese Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis).
