Once again I have received a system message letting me know that the "plant of the day" is one that I own and asking me to make some kind of comment. Problem is... I received the message 16 hours after the fact. Is there anyway for these messages to be sent earlier so a person has half a chance to actually add some kind of comment?

The plant of the day is just a way of getting a lot of plants listed without doing all the work at one time. You are able to contribute comments to the plant of the day at any time. That is how the system was designed, if a daylily is the plant of the day and you own it but you just planted it, you can wait till you see how it performs and then go to the plant of the day for that particular cultivar and make your comments.

Just for those who do not know, if you go to the database and pull up a plant then if that plant has been featured on plant of the day, there will be a photo on the right with a note underneath saying what day it was featured and you can then go there and add a comment. Just click on the date and a box will open up to write your comment in.

All good information but it does not answer my question.

The question I posts is: "Is there anyway for these messages to be sent earlier so a person has half a chance to actually add some kind of comment?"

Sorry, if I did not answer your question. What type of comment are you wanting to add? Why do you need a warning when you can add a comment at any time? Sorry but I am lost here.

I did not ask about how or when to make a comment. Please re-read my original question and perhaps you may better understand.

I guess the question is can the message be sent earlier? I don't know. I don't understand why it would need to be when there is no time limit on making a response to a featured plant of the day.

The message was sent to you immediately after the Plant of the Day came up. You just didn't see the message until 16 hours later. If you had logged on and checked your system messages 16 hours earlier you would have seen it right away.

Your not understanding the question has not stopped you from answering; you have managed to send the thread in a direction away from the original question. Sighing!

Thank you for the answer Dave. If I had nothing better to do all day than sit at the computer I would have seen the message immediately. Unfortunately, like the majority of people, I have work to do and can only check the computer twice a day.

So am I understanding that there is no way the "plant of the day" notifications can be sent earlier?

It would be nice to be able to contribute a comment to a "plant of the day" in a timely manner - on the actual day that the plant is being featured. If the notifications cannot be sent earlier is there any way to "opt out" of the notifications? or should I just ignore them? Thank You!

The notification is sent as soon as the new day begins (which is midnight UTC or 7pm CT) and cannot be sent earlier than that. Feel free to ignore them. Smiling

Maybe what @Seedfork was trying to get you to notice was - there is no urgency in posting to the thread so it doesn't matter if you do it when you first spot the notice or a day or a week or a month later.

I'm always late to respond unless I'm on the sight at the time it goes up and now I know that time. Thanks for that Dave. My comment here is to say, to all who may read this, that I do go back and read old posts of a plant of the day because I sometimes garner valuable insights from other growers of a plant I have so please post early or whenever. All input is helpful. I'm a fan of @greene and value your input. I tip my hat to you.

I've never paid much attention to the "plant of the day," and I don't think I've ever gotten a notification before (probably because none of the other plants on my list have been a POTD), but after reading this thread I went to check out the comments for culinary sage... and now I'm wondering:

Wouldn't it be better if these comments were in the same place as the other comments for the plant in the database, so that someone researching a plant would have all the comments together?

They are there way down under the related threads list. In this case it is tittled "Salvia of the day:Culinary Sage (Salvia officinalis)". Is that what you meant?

No, I mean "wouldn't it be better if they were in the 'comments' section." Doesn't it seem that anyone researching a particular plant would expect all the comments to be in one place?

I see what you mean. I think they did start the plant of the day to generate more comments but I'm uncertain how they could merge the thread comments from a specific forum into the general comments. It might help if it was moved up above the event reports. We could be scrolling way down in the future.

I know there are a lot of different things going on right now -- but do you have any thoughts about this, @Dave ?
