Striped bark Maples are uncommon in my area, I've honestly never heard of them until now. I did a quick google search and found a Acer pensylvanicum with red stripped bark called Acer pensylvanicum Erythrocladum. I may have to add this one to my garden

I wouldn't say most don't work. We have a few native maples and japanese maples in my area but you may be right with Acer pensylvanicum. Maybe the reason I haven't seen it is it's a not suited for our hot humid summers. I'll be sure to check into it though.
