Jacki, I love that bird cage! Hurray! That is such a great idea! Oh yeah, Red Green - we used to watch that but I don't think its on anymore. He's definitely one of a kind!

Lynn, I had problems with something doing that to one of my semps early in the summer. I think whatever it was actually chewed on mine though. It finally stopped and the semp recovered just fine. Never did figure out what it was.

Half of this Orostachys is gone now. The leaves are very tiny, a slug could polish one or more off very quickly. So far whatever is doing it has not touched the offsets all round the main rosette. I sure hope it can make it through the winter with just half the plant intact. I'm putting slug bait out hoping that is what the problem is.
I had terrible dreams last night. I went out and the beds were covered in huge, fat slugs. I had this little strip of copper sheeting and was going around slicing the slugs in half with the copper. When I woke up there still was a kazillion more slugs out there. Now I'm afraid to go look at the beds this morning. Sad Rolling on the floor laughing

Oh what a nightmare - ewww, slugs! Luckily, I don't have many of those here.

Probably, the reason you won't have heard of Red Green is that he's a Canadian comedian named Steve Smith (no, really!) and he's very funny. The Red Green Show is all about his adventures in a small town in Ontario, and the crazy characters who inhabit the area. Really down to earth humor. The big thing is his projects, which always involve the use of duct tape...

Funny, but last year I was considering caging a few slugs as pets. There are some really beautiful ones out there (not in my area though).

Here's a web site with some pictures of pretty ones. There was a big web site out there with lots of pictures, but I could not find it. Some are really nice looking, int a bizarre way.

Wow, I didn't know they came in so many colors. We have the common tanish/grey ones here. When we lived in Puget Sound we had the Banana Slug. : ) They are quite large.
Well I just came in from putting slug bait out and a metal cage over the Orostachys spinosa. Hope this works and keeps it safe.
Thanks for that link twit, now I almost feel quilty. I'll get over it. Whistling

If we had banana slugs around here, I probably would have had some as pets. The pics of them look pretty.

Shame on you, Lynn. Next we'll be hearing stories from you about how good Bill stew was! Glare

I am going back out and making sure there is plenty of slug bait for them. Bad slugs, bad slugs. Crying

It's hard to believe one slug ate all those leaves! Greedy thing - you kill it, before it eats more. I like to use lava rock or other sharp mulch as they don't cross it.

I may have to find a source for lava rock Jacki. We never had any slugs until 2 years ago. Now I am finding them everywhere, and they are being very destructive. The slug didn't eat it all in one day, this happened over about a weeks time. I have it surrounded with slug bait now.

The lava rock I get is in bags from the local garden center, and I have seen in in landscaping centers bulk, so you could probably find it that way. Otherwise, get a hold of your Perennial Obsessions lady or other specialty nurseries and see if she knows of a source (or would bring some in for you)

Well, it's hard to say for sure as I don't have slugs as a rule - this is classified as semi arid, so I get a few snails, and the odd very small brown-grey slug. You will have to buy a bag and try it, as I know they won't go across ashes or other sharp mulch.

I've also heard that slugs and snails do not like sharp or rough surfaces to cross. I'm hoping my chicken grit will deter them.
