I have 5 mini-roses with no tags. 2 are blooming right now and I'm hoping someone out there can help me ID them..

#1. (I think it may be "Popcorn"

Thumb of 2011-09-18/marti/3f87ad

#2 I have no idea at all.

I've never grown Popcorn, so I don't know, but HMF says Popcorn smells like honey and has 13 petals. Those seem like good clues.

The other rose looks like a dozen different minis in my garden, so I wouldn't hazard a guess.

I check on "Popcorn" thru John's Miniature Roses". They specialize in miniature roses. According to their discription of Popcorn it is
Petal count 5-8
Height: 9-12 inches
Bloom size: 7/8 of an inch
introducted in 1973

Mine does have a wonderful honey-rose scent to it.

I think John's is wrong. Many of the HMF photos clearly show more than 8 petals, and so does your photo, for that matter.

Here's something amusing: John's own photo of it shows 13 petals rather than 5-8.

That's what I thought also. I was just quoting what was posted for Popcorn. I'm going to try and see if anyone from the Rose Society here in Ventura county can ID it. I also know a rose judge and will take both to her tomorrow.

That's a great idea. And please don't ever assume that John's is a reliable authority. It's a branch of Heirloom, which is called "Err-loom" by some rose experts because of the mistakes it makes. Hilarious!

I will remember that. So it is not a good place to buy mini-roses?

No, no, no. I'm not saying they don't send out nice plants. I've ordered from John's and I've always been happy with the plants they send me. I just mean that John's shouldn't be regarded as an infallible authority.

I've ordered minis from Johns (when Nor'East went to wholesale only) and was kinda disappointed.. of the 4 I ordered, I got 2 about a month later, and then the other 2 about 6 months after that. All have survived, being they were teensy little things when I got them.

Unfortunately, now that Nor'East, Sequoia, and The Uncommon Rose are gone, John's is one of only a few places that sell mini-roses at mini-prices. Rogue Valley, Vintage, Chamblee, and Palatine carry minis, but the prices are the same as for big roses. That doesn't seem right.

Most of my mini's I got from a member of DG. Her name is Melva and she grows mostly OGR. She had a guy hired that was helping her with the roses and he lost some tags for her. She now has 2 new helpers that are very careful with her cuttings and tags.

I just got a list of the next ones she is sending me. Not mini's, but I think I'll have some really good ones.

New list:
Blush Noisette 1817
Natchatoches Noisette found rose 1714
Arcadia LA Tea found rose 1985
Debutante 1902
Laure Davoust 1834
White Pearl in Red Dragons Mouth Uknown year
(Chi Long Han Zhu)
Shaliers Provence bred 1799
introduced into UK 1802
Morey's Pink China 1994

Plus I'm having a Climbing Cecile Brunner shipped to KY to a friend who will plant it along her fence line and let it grow wild. I told her that Cecile will try and grow up into the trees, but she said that was fine. She looked it up on her computer and thinks it will be gorgeous when it is in full bloom hanging out of the trees.
These are all cuttings that she has rooted and if I lose one she has been good about replacing it. This will probably be my last order from her as I don't have much room here at the trailer and I hate to send anything more to my sister property in KY as she is unable to care for anything more.

Melva's a wonderful lady. She's here, just very infrequently (she hopefully will see this!). She broke her arm earlier this year, so it's been tough for her to do her stuff and be online at the same time. I ordered some roses from her (back on Cubits) for Spring 2012. I've ordered from her before and the one that survived (my incompetence) has been a major trouper!

Just popped in to say that;s not Popcorn. Popcorn has a looser form. I have a picture somewhere. Mine came from Nor'East back in the dark ages when John S. still owned it, or maybe even Harm.

Yeah, I remember when Nor'East/Greeheart aquired Sequoia and shortly after went wholesale only.

And please don't forget Burlington Rose Nursery for mini's. Burling was Ralph Moore's (Sequoia Nursery) assistant for probably 30+ years, and I believe she still carries many of his mini's in addition to so many other types of roses. However, I just checked and her website says "Under Construction" and just gives an email address to contact her.

Betty - She doesn't have a working website that you can order from.. you email her & she sends you a XPS of her available plants. I love Burling's roses.. this particular year I didn't have good luck w/them, but I firmly believe that it's my fault & not her roses.

Took my 2 blooms to a certified rose judge. The little white one is not Popcorn. She has both and is looking them up for me. She also wanted to take cuttings so I told her she could. I also took a piece of the one I have with no buds so far, but has little tiny leaves, she'll work on that one also and keep the cutting to root. She was impressed with the list of roses I have coming from melva in Texas.

Melva comes here periodically, so you could ask her to identify them too.

You're right, Betty. Burling does carry minis and at very, very low prices. Her website has said "under construction" forever, so it's best to send her an e-mail, as Toni said. Or call her on the phone. She's an absolute sweetie.
