Thread OP

Can anyone identify this weed, it is growing in a friends yard and taking over the grass. It is in Massachusetts.

I puzzled over this since you posted on the other thread - glad you brought it over here. I was sure I knew this plant, what I might be thinking of is Hieracium aurantiacum.

It looks familiar to me too but my brain doesn't want to give up the info. I'm going to watch this and see what comes up.

It reminds me of Knautia for some reason, but not quite right.

Is it a ground creeper, or does it get tall?

No flowers yet, but spring is just starting here.
It is still not high of the ground, first year they came up

The long hairs on the leaves should really narrow it down, those are why I was thinking Hieracium (hawkweed). Here's another page of pics, scroll down to the bottom image. We have it in the less maintained areas of grass (hate to call it lawn) around our house:

I think you might be onto something there.

Hieracium pilosella does look closer than Hieracium aurantiacum. We have both here I think but I notice the orange one more because it's a more unusual colour. I'd volunteer a comparison picture if I could find both but it's raining....

Yes, formerly known as Hieracium aurantiacum. Another name change I wasn't aware of Sighing! I see according to the Catalogue of Life Hieracium pilosella is now Pilosella officinarum ("provisionally accepted"). I'm getting too old for all this name changing.....

Darn! I have named a yellow one Pilosella officinarum around the same time I named the orange one Pilosella aurantiaca in June 2012. Rolling my eyes.

The data was supplied in February 2012, those I first named in my photos are in September 2010. I copied the name from the orange ones to more photos I took in June and August 2012.

Aaah, but Pilosella aurantiaca (L.) F.W.Schultz & Sch.Bip. is accepted! Confusing?! Hilarious!
