Is it possible to grow clematis in a large ceramic pot? What would I do to protect it in winter??

Yes you can certainly grow them in containers, in fact there are new varieties bred specifically for this purpose. They are hardy enough.

Put it in a large thick walled pot - at least 10 to 15 gallons. The general rule is plants in pots must be hardy to two zones below your zone
