Walnut. Where did you find it? I only ask because squirrels can cause major problems if they get inside the attic, etc.

I have no use for internet bullies!
It might be a hickory nut.

Alyssa - I found it in the garden in a spot where I wouldn't want a tree.
Greene - Could easily be. Thanks! We already have a hickory tree thanks to the squirrels.

I've been checking out Hickory nuts, there's several species. None seem to match exactly but Pignut comes close.
The size looks too small to be a walnut. The shell usually has deeper grooves, a more raised joint and not with a pointed end.

Thanks for the information. I doubt I'll plant it but if I ever find more I can discard them as well.

Hey Arlene- crack it open and see what's inside!
Maybe the inside of the nut will solidify the answer...although Greene is probably right since you already have a hickory.

Shagbark hickory nuts are great eating but a lot of work.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize that we can't eat money. Cree proverb

No matter what greene says...it's usually Super Sleuth Janet JRsbugs who is always spot on!
She narrowed it down to which Hickory.
