I always like them! I was thinking Argiope aurantia, but I don't know how much variation there is in those patterns!

Ooo, spiders are so cool! Something else to go try out my new phone camera lens on. (my Mother's Day gift from the kids)

(I'm back) Less than stellar results on the spider, he would move away when I got close enough for the macro lens to focus. I did get some good shots of evil little thrips on my yellow sticky traps, though. These little guys are less than 2mm. long, really tiny but they sure do a lot of damage to orchid flowers! The sticky traps are excellent for letting me know when they are arriving in numbers.

You did! Smiling
I was just looking for a picture I took some years ago from an upstairs window out into a field of Goldenrod, next to the pond at our place in Pennsy in the Fall. It was very early in the morning and the sun was just coming up over the Goldenrod. There were dozens of spiderwebs filled with dew and the sun made them sparkle like dozens of shiny sails. This was just for a few minutes and then it was gone. I remember just looking and seemingly forgetting to breathe for that moment.
I am sure that picture is on some DVD, but it would take me forever to find it. Perhaps you can see it in your mind! Smiling

I can both see it and feel that sight. Lovely. As I don't use any pesticides we have a lot of spiders but I don't recall ever seeing an all white one.

Yes, I've seen that spider webbing phenomenon before, too. Just beautiful!

Patty, you really should post your owl pictures to the birds thread, too, so more people will see them.

Yes, Ursula...I used to see the dew on the webs in NC... it is an ephemeral sight!..this was the first time I've noticed pollen on the web... walking the garden in the early morning with the dog and cat ( and camera in hand) is a ritual I miss!

Not nearly as cool as Patty's owls, but I had a family of Blue Jays in my bamboo yesterday afternoon, 3 babies and a parent, who was coming and going to the birdfeeders and feeding the babies some seed. They were pretty noisy. You can only tell the babies from the parents by their short little tails. Otherwise they've all got really pretty, fresh looking adult colors. The second (blurry) picture has the parent in the middle feeding the lower baby some seed.

I never realized how large the BJ babies are but they sure have baby faces don't they. What a racket they must have made.

I was in the garden early this morning watering the new palms and the persimmon tree and noticed a ruckus in the lake. I looked up and saw 3 otters playing in the lake right along the shore about 12 feet from me. Now to get a picture of them.
