Sally, that's awesome! I'm going to try that the next time I'm handed an unhappy baby (which happens more often than you'd think, LOL).

For a baby with tummy trouble (gas), it can also help to hold them horizontally, with their tummy in the palm of your hand and the rest of the baby supported along that same arm, head near the crook of your elbow. With your arm across the front of your body, baby is tucked close for comfort, and that little bit of pressure on their tummy may ease them, especially when you gently bounce them.

And I'm sure they've already tried every combination of bouncing moves, including what seems to be the universal baby bounce move: Step left with a Bounce, add a smaller bounce, then Step right with a Bounce, add a smaller bounce... step or sway, Bounce and bounce, Bounce and bounce, Bounce and bounce. It's a little embarrassing the first time you find yourself doing the Baby Bounce automatically -- and realize you're not holding a baby. *Blush*

“Little girl, why are you doing this? You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!” After a few moments thought, she bent down, picked up another starfish & hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “Well, I made a difference to that one!” Be the change you wish to see in the world. http://www.stillsthatspeak.com...

Anyone have a good way to deal with lack of sleep? My body feels like it used to in college after a night of heavy drinking. My wife does the best she can to help me get sleep but I am still only getting about 5 hours. That may be fine for some people or even for a couple nights but it is accumulating and taking its toll. I have been pumping the caffeine but my body has been just laughing at it...LOL

You and the Mrs are going to have to take turns getting a solid 8-10 hours of sleep every now and then, Jeff. Each of you take turns getting a GREAT night of sleep, far enough away not to be awaken by the baby. Either that, or if you're lucky enough to have a sibling, parent, or friend that can take care of the baby one night a week to let you both crash for 8-10 hours at the same time.... somehow you both have to get solid sleep at least once a week, preferably more often. You're right, only 5 hours of sleep is okay for one or two nights but not for longer.

There is no substitute for sleep, period. Temporarily some can do it, but it is not sustainable.
One thing that helps is to eat super healthy and drink lots of water.

Cam is right... you have to take it in shifts so you're not both constantly short on sleep. If Darcy can pump enough for a feeding or two, that will let you give her a break. I know you work during the week, but you could do Friday and Saturday nights... any chance you can arrange to go in to work late on Wednesdays or take half-days of vacation for a mid-week break for Darcy?). Also, remember breast milk can be frozen.

Whoever's turn it is to get 7 or 8 hours uninterrupted sleep should hit the sack right after dinner.

It will get better!! Courage. Group hug

I used to stay up til midnight and feed Aaron, then go to bed. My husband would go to bed at 9 and feed him at 5. That way we both slept and both got to spend time feeding. I pumped for a while but hated it so I quit. Plus Aaron had other issues so I ended up not being able to breast feed.

Frillylily, I'd like to drink more water but water doesn't have caffeine Sticking tongue out

Last night I got about 7 hours of sleep and I feel awesome. We fed the baby formula before bed instead of breast milk and I think that was the ticket. Hopefully this long weekend will allow both of us to catch up a little.

Great to hear, Jeff. Yes, formula is heavier and will keep the baby satisfied longer, and has enough nutrition to keep babies healthy. You are fully aware of the benefits of breast feeding so perhaps a combination of the two, with formula at bed time is the answer.

web search indicates that caffeine shows up in breast milk and can have an adverse affect on baby.
In other words the caffeine mom drinks to stay awake because the little fart doesn't sleep, is keeping them both up Hilarious!

Years ago, in Dublin I would see billboards touting "Guinness Makes Milk." According to the ad campaign, drinking Guinness promotes lactating. End result? Both Mom and newborn doze.

Haha...Guiness makes milk!

My wife doesn't drink caffeine at the moment. We found out early on that it makes its way through the breast milk. Poor woman, I couldn't imagine doing this without it. Whoever says women are the weaker gender is fooling themselves!

Suggest however that Darcy pump at the regular night feeding time when you're giving formula... think I remember reading that keeping a regular schedule is important to both milk production and to her comfort. SO glad you found something that will hopefully keep helping you both get some uninterrupted sleep. When she gets a little older (not sure when -- ask pediatrician or look it up), you can also add a bit of cereal (like the baby rice flakes) to that evening bottle.

Jeff, I think it's time for another picture of Addy, we haven't had one since May 6th.
