That's a good way to hang the cork, Elaine. I still have never made use of cork like this. All mine are made to hang on something (usually a tree, shelf, and/or a wall) and I put a large/long cup hook in the back of the cork. I need to use one of my really thick pieces to build a raft. The cork you show is the standard thickness, 1- 1 1/2" thick. That's what most of my cork is. I have several pieces of cork that are about 4" thick and very, very dense. These weigh 4-5 times more for the same size slab of standard thickness.

Klaus found two Deer racks this Spring on his walks through the woods. I did a lot of repotting today and this Neofinetia falcata needed a clean up since its mount pretty much fell apart. So I separated the fans and mounted them to one of the racks. I hope they will adhere and take off!!

Here are my newest batch of mounts. I have several new woods. I love working with these raw, kind of ugly, wild-fetched pieces of woods. It is sort of like turning the ugly duckling into a swan. For some, I am showing the reverse, which is left unaltered and gives you an idea of what the epoxy-finished side started out as. Plants can be mounted on either side. The chemically cured epoxy is inert and roots grow onto that surface just like they do onto the unfinished surface.

Click on the pictures for the best view.

Your cork rafts are so pretty Elaine!

Ursula, I LOVE the antlers with the orchids on them...just beautiful! And the lacy ribbon is such a lovely addition!

Ken, I love all your new wood...have up gotten anymore of that black wood that you showed me once? I love the rounded ash one, and the darker of the cholla's and the shapes of the heart pines. I was surprised at how orange the walnut is...just thought that would be a much darker true brown for some reason (I know nothing about wood).

Here's some coco fiber "on the hoof" so to speak. I had a couple of citronella candles in these half coconuts, and after most of the wax was burnt, I saved them for - whatever, you know? Well, turns out the half of the coconut shell just pried out of there really easily with a big screwdriver, and I was left with the husk with a nice hollow in it. Drilled a few holes, fastened a wire to it, and planted a little mini-Phal in there. It seems pretty happy. Lots of roots crawling around.

Patty, the walnut is a nice, "toasted" brown color. The pictures were taken in the solarium with full sun, so all these woods are a good bit darker when viewed in shady conditions. The sun is the culprit here. Same with the cypress pictures. The wood on the obverse is almost black. Unfortunately I just don't ever see any broad pieces of this water-soaked cypress any more. Most of these pieces will be around 4" wide, though they may be a couple of feet long.

I use coconut husks, with and without shells for mounting occasionally as well, Elaine. Needless to say I have to be "gifted" these from folks in FL. We don't have a lot of coconut trees here in NE Mississippi. Whistling

Have any of you ever used this crazy glue for mounting. Apparently it is surgical grade and safe for human and plant tissue - or at least this guy thinks it is safe for plant tissue and it does look like it is. I like the idea that moisture accelerates the process.

I have used this cyanoacrylate gel before but never even considered it for attaching plants to mounts. Interesting concept and video. I will have to try it.

Thanks, Alice.

LOL, I was watching the Dr. Motes video and it was one of those other "suggested" youtubes that always pop up on the right side of my screen. I just had to click on it even though I hate that my computer knows so much about my specific interests. Angry

I use it but don't much like it. In my experience it neither holds much weight nor lasts very long. Tillandsia take longer to root to a mount than orchids or staghorns, so longevity is an advantage when it comes to tillys. Of course, I have never tried the cyanoacrylate gel, and don't know how long it holds.

Is there some reason we don't use clear silicone to glue the plants? My dad told me a long time ago it was the best 'glue' around and I've used it for lots of outside things...it's water & weather proof as far as I can tell....just not sure if it would bother the plants?

Welcome! to the neighborhood, Jen!
