Look what's showing up on my 'Old Glory'... I was hoping it might just be cold damage, but I'm sure it's something a lot worse than a little frost... Grumbling

It's been in the same spot for several years, so hopefully it's just slow showing it's symptoms. I'm going to be keeping an eye on my collection and hope for the best! Looked at the tag and it's actually 'Glory'.

Is this a Hosta disease? It doesn't show up well enough in the photo for me to see it.

Yes, it's HVX. Look at the crinkled, darker color bleeding in the veins. Unfortunately, this one is in my garden! Now I will have to destroy it and plant some other type of plant there. I've heard that you should wait for a year before planting another hosta, but I think I'll play it safe and plant something else.

Sorry about your Hosta, that sucks, I will have to keep an eye on mine for any sign of that.

Thanks! It will be okay. Now that I know it's out there I'll be extra cautious in that area. A friend told me that she saw some infected plants at the local Lowe's last weekend.

Rose - Chris at Hallson's has been saying that the new thinking is you should never plant another hosta in the same location. At any rate, you need to ensure you don't plant another hosta there until and traces of root left in the hole have died and rotted away.

mcash70 - if HVX is new to you, please check out these links:

http://www.inthecountrygardena...

Buy any new hostas only from nurseries that know about HVX and buy from suppliers that test their stock. Box stores have a high percentage of infected plants.

Treat any new plant no matter, where you got it, as potentially infected and keep it separate from other hostas for awhile.

Develop a habit of always completely cleaning your tools between plants. Alcohol or bleach wipes work well.

The problem with HVX is that it can be in a plant and not show symptoms for several years. In a few varieties, it may never show symptoms. So if you aren't careful, you can spread the virus.

HVX can be managed, but there are still many people who don't know about it or don't care.
