Unless you live where Betty lives or have the space and patience, I'd suggest only trying a few of the newer Blyth iris until you see how they do in your climate. They have a hard time adapting here in Tennessee.

Decadence took a few years to grow and blooms evey other year
Drinks at Sunset has barely held on for 3 years, but now has two small fans, so will probably bloom in 2013
High Master grows well but has never bloomed
Lousia's Song grows well but I don't think it has bloomed recently.
Beach Girl and Coconut Ice are barely hanging in there each year
One of the Coffee ones (Coffee Whisper, I think) blooms every year.

My other TB Blyth ones are similar to the above (the newer ones; the ones intro'd before 2000 all do a lot better). I have a lot of iris (don't ask.... *Blush* ), so it doesn't bother me that some rarely bloom. But if you are only going to have room for a few iris and want blooms every year, I would only try a few of the Blyth ones to start.

I've heard others mention the Blyth iris being a bit difficult--is that due to the change of hemispheres when they make it to the states?

Maybe you could stand outside all touristed up (with a little American Flag sticking out of your fanny pack--all tourists must have a fanny pack!--and your Tempo Two catalog in hand) nose pressed up against the glass, window or fence and then they'll feel bad and let you in. Tell em all your iris friends on Cubits are living vicariously through you and your Blyth visit--can't we knight him in the name of Irisdom or something? Oooh, yup, tell him you're there to interview him for Cubits...I know that will open some doors to the Iris Kingdom in Austrailia:lol:

I used to order from Barry a long time ago, but alas they didn't do well for me here in Texas. The fact that they arrive in March and then have to go through summer here after they have gone through summer there, just wears them out. My best Blyth is Light Beam, it is a yellow plicata. It blooms for me every year even if it is a very mild winter. I just love it every year and have had it for a very long time.

I love Polar Queen, but it only blooms when we have a very cold winter, it didn't bloom for about ten years and I thought I had lost it. We had a cold winter in 2008 and, surprise there it was.

People can order some Blyths through Keith Keppel.. His pink SDB 'Chanted' not only is pretty, but helpful to hybridizers.

I think Carnival Capers is my Favorite Blyth Iris, I enjoy Enchanted a lot too, but can't seem to get a picture of it that does her justice.

I don't know if you meant ENCHANTER or if there is another Blyth iris named ENCHANTED, but if you meant ENCHANTER I think it is absolutely gorgeous. I've had it for at least four years now and would you believe it has never bloomed for me, even though I've added at least two more rhizomes along the way and have it in a prime spot in my garden. So this will be its final year if it does not bloom this spring. Bummer! But I did catch it up at Keith Keppel's back in 2009.

Now that I think about it, is there an SDB named ENCHANTED?

Boy, It must have been before my 3rd cup of coffee. I can't be held accountable for anything until I get that 3rd cup in. lol Yes It's Enchanter not Enchanted. That is a really nice pic from Keith's garden. I have had bloom every year since I've planted it. I wonder if this is one of those iris that requires a bit more of a chill period to bloom? Do any of your friends in your part of the world get it to bloom? It's nice to know that there are some things I can grow in this winter wonderland that can't be successful in the sun belt, lol.

P/S: To the above. I should have you send me a rhizome from your Enchanter and see if it would bloom here, just as an experiment. (unless of course it feels threatened and blooms for you this spring!)

We'll see how it goes this spring -- I added another rhizome last fall, so I guess there's always a chance it'll bloom for me...

Polly requested a thread on Blyth irises, so I'm bumping this one up.

I noticed that at the end of this thread I was complaining that my ENCHANTER had never bloomed for me so this last spring might be its last. Well, WOW -- did it ever come through for me! I love love love it!!!

1st and 2nd day blooms, as well as a side shot:

Yeah, unfortunately my sprinklers don't work very well there anymore, and my DH tried to fix it and couldn't -- so his solution was to drag a hose over and put an oscillating sprinkler there that I have to run manually. And since I have to use it so often and it's a real pain to set up and get just right, I elected to just leave it there. So we'll just have to excuse my hose shots from now on... Maybe we could convince ourselves it's a snake? Hilarious!

I don't have a sprinkling system so I'm always dragging around hoses. I rolled them all up this morning as this is lawn mowing day then when Cade is done I'll start to water. My son has made me some sprinklers out of PVC pipe that are several feet long with 3 heads. They work nicely. As this is a Barry Blyth thread here are two of his intros. ....more later when the work is done.

If I had time I would post as have about 80% of the ones pictured and some not. Keith knows my love for his and Barry's work so 95% of my bonus are either his or Barry's.

One of these days I will list all of Barry's I have.
