Trade for More

By Shelly

Trade plants. Plants often need to be divided, and many gardeners could benefit from the divisions you don't need.

I'm always trading plants with my elderly backyard neighbor and her daughter, as well as with my next door neighbor. Even if something doesn't need dividing, my elderly friend and I trade cuttings. I grow a lot of plants in containers and when I get tired of something, one of my neighbors is always happy to take it.

I think trading is a great idea, I have friends and neighbors that I trade with quite often. Smiling

Becky I so love your sense of humor.
I love trading plants, or just plain giving them away.

Yep we do that with outdoor plants. Sometimes I will go out the back door and there will be a whole bunch of something sitting in a dish of water from my neighbor to the east. I try to divide and give things back too. Spiders though! Oh Becky, I have so many (hanging at my windows in lieu of draperies that there is never a time that I am not rooting more in the kitchen! I have a spider epidemic here!!!!

Until I got here,(ATP) I never thought of trading, I've always given cuttings of anything I have to anyone who wanted it.( Maybe that's why I don't have plants to trade, they are already gone Glare ) Strangers coming to my Yard Sales have admired plants, even my treasured Iris and Daylilies and I shared with them. I really love giving plants.

Lynn, I wasn't joking that time....they really did call me Spider Woman. And gave me a certificate too!

Jamie, I have solid green, variegated with the while in the middle and just got one with white down the sides. I planted them in the ground, facing east and even in Phoenix they did well. Now they are all inside or on the balcony!

Becky I knew you weren't joking. : ) You just make me laugh and smile.

Faye, I have always done the same with my plants. Then I found I could trade them for plants I would love to have. Wow, it's like finding a gold mine. Thumbs up

Problem with trading is that while I make every effort to catalogue (see pix attached) and label, I can't always identify them in future years and lose track of the names so I end up with NOIDs (expensive NOIDs but Noids all the same!) I must get better at this but every year I add more...EGAD!

Becky, my spiders go out for the summer but come back in as the temps change. Here's a pix from a few years ago...but like THIS all winter long...(can't dust or clean windows!).

Oh see, I gave Creeping Charlie resposibilty for the lawn. That keeps him so bizzy that he has no interest in the plants.

What? Is your Creeping Charlie different than my Creeping Charley? (The one I know is as invasive as the dickens up here!)

The Creeping Charlie I had wouldn't survive outdoors in the winter time. Or at least I didn't think it would. Blinking
I just googled it. Crying

Good idea. I take mine down in the summer and set them on the porch so they can breathe and I can clean the windows better. A couple got waterlogged during heavy rains, I didn't attend to them and so they died (at least down to manageable size) ...and I was NOT SAD!!!!

Jamie, We had a surprise freeze here one winter and I went outside to find blackened spider plants. SW forum friends encouraged me to just cut them back to the soil level. I had nothing to loose. Now they are the prettiest I've ever had!
