My wife grew some basil, and another plant started to grow with it in the pot we could not I'd it but it looked like a type of herb. Could you please help identify it. Thank you.

Well, that's just bad. Its a Solanum relative - same family as tomatoes and potatoes but nothing you want to eat. Pull it up before those little seed pods burst.

Can you identify this flowering vine? I believe it's some sort of rose, and very old. It came from a site where there hadn't been a building since the nineteen twenties. It blooms in May and is full of white flowers. My mother told me the name decades ago, but I've forgotten. It is quite thorny.

That's beautiful and is old. If it has ONLY 5 petals, then it is considered "species rose" equating that it is the original, ancestral plant of origin. Priceless.

I extremely novice when it comes to plant history and would love it if a seasoned gardener could chime in.

How about this name. Rosa 'Happenstance' looks similar but the leaf is not right I think. Its a real thorny beast as is R. 'Mermaid'

Where I live people eat this plant after properly cooking the leaves. I only grow it because it looks pretty.

The rose could be Mermaid which normally prefers warmer climates, or, possibly, if it only blooms once, Macartney Rose a local invasive.

Macartney Rose was my thought also. Imported from China to be used as a fence\hedge, but it got way out of control.

Yes Rosa bracteata the Macartney Rose looks just right. It doesn't sound like a good one to have though.
