I think it's a lilac, Syringa vulgaris, though the leaves look a bit rounder than I am used to. But given the smell and what the flowers look like, that's my bet.
I did think it smelled a bit like lilac. I had no idea you could shape them like a boxwood and still have them bloom! These are cut quite short for a lilac. I always wanted a lilac but thought I didn't have space for one. I may have to rethink that!
Thank you so much! I never would have been able to since the landscaping is contracted out. The lilacs have been there for years so I'm not sure when they were planted. Doubtful anyone would have any idea since I only see the crews planting annuals.
I'm just amazed that this plant exists! I don't know why it isn't more popular in big cities where space is a premium. It makes a lovely hedge.
