I planted lots of irises last fall. I knew they may not bloom this spring, but i ended up with a few blooms. BUT...i had 4 very strange blooms. They came right out of the base, basically with no stem!?! No idea why. I've asked several people with irises and no one knows. Any idea why they would bloom this way!?

Hi April and welcome to garden.org. We have a whole forum on Irises - here's a link to their thread on odd blooms. Lots of very experienced folks over there who I'm sure will answer your question.

Newly planted iris will do this sometimes. Cold snaps during development are the likely culprits, too. Did you have any very cold nights during that time?
