Beautiful, bright sunshiny day today. I had planned to get a lot of work done in the garden, but kept getting interrupted by garden visitors. Not really complaining - they are fun to have wandering through the garden admiring the iris.

Summer temperatures have arrived this week and caused the delayed blooms to catch up in a hurry! All of my four footed supervisors have been "busy" watching me work from the shade of the trees next to the garden.

Trouble - Chief Iris Inspector

Wonderful, wonderful!!!

I liked them all plus the kitty . He looks like my Salem. Mine has a small white patch on his throat. They make nice garden buddies.

Some great bloom going on, and the garden inspectors are on duty! Love them! I have a big clump of Louisa's Song but I won't be seeing a bloom of it, like a few other nice clumps there are no buds. So it's nice to see yours.

Why is that? The large clump of NOid that Mary Ann liked last year, did not bloom for me but did her, go figure.

If the clump is large it may be that it needs thinning, Teresa. Did you take it all up and replant last year or did you just take a few rhizomes from the outer edge of the clump. If you do not want to take up the whole clump just take off a few from the edge and plant them somewhere else in your garden and watch them bloom from all the stored up energy they have.

Teresa there was a lot of that happening in my garden this year too. I think, for me, it is a combination of factors. Last year there was a solid winter long snow cover and nearly everything bloomed very well. I think many of the clumps needed a year to regain some energy - so bloomed sparsely or not at all this season.

This past winter, we had little snow cover, lots of heavy rain and periods of freezing and thawing. All took their toll on the beds. Lost a lot of small rhizomes that did not have good deep root systems.

I also thinned many clumps pretty drastically and re-set a smaller number of retained rhizomes. Most of those did not bloom this year either.

Hopefully next year will be better!
