Spotted on the dune line at Mexico Beach FL last weekend. It looks like a plant I got "stung" touching a few yrs ago, so this one went untouched. TIA!

Shows it as unvouchered in Gulf county. That's where I saw it, at Mexico Beach.

That's only a small area amongst most of Florida having it, I would be surprised if it wasn't there too.

There are other Cnidoscolus species but this one matches well.

There's only two species in florida which are the same, one is a variety. They are Cnidoscolus urens and Cnidoscolus urens (L.) Arthur var. stimulosus (Michx.) Govaerts.

Distribution. Florida: native; nearly throughout the state. General: along the Coastal Plain from southeast Virginia to south Florida, west to Mississippi and east Louisiana.

Habitat. Dry, often sandy areas such as sandhills, dry woods, beaches, scrub, and disturbed areas (such as roadsides, fields, and lawns).

Similar Species

None, although species of Urtica (true stinging nettles) also have stinging hairs (see Comments below).

Field Recognition Features. Erect plants covered with stiff stinging hairs; palmately 3– to 5–lobed leaves, conspicuous tubular-based white flowers in a cluster terminating the stem; 3-parted bristly capsule with 3 mottled seeds. Blooming all year in Florida.

Does the capsule have more than 3 parts? It looks to have more although there's no similar species.

There's plenty of images of it to be found, now I see the green stripe down the seed capsule is in the middle of each section. There's a pic of the pod on the usda site.

Thanks for your efforts! Those sites have good pics of this one. I definitely saw it in Gulf county, Mexico Beach, and had no idea it was in Covington county, AL too. Only ever seen it at the beach, first in Okaloosa county on Okaloosa island, then last weekend at MB. Good to know to look out for it around home too.
