The label says Silene flos-jovis but now that I see these inflo's it looks like it isn't that. Maybe a plantago? It was a gift plant. Quicker to get an answer from you all most of the time.

Thats what I thought. Bummer.The up side is that I'll let it flower and do it's thing then get a good photo of it's roots when I yank it out. Now i know how to grow plantago major on purpase and I can eat it to Crossing Fingers!

It's just not appropriate for beautification of a cemetery garden Josephine. We do have a large butterfly presence here though. Trying to grow enough Asclepius too get a way station designation but we're not there yet. We have plenty of nectar and pollen sources for 63 native bee species and we have lots of moths, buttefly and birds. Our planting need to be attractive to the public who visit and to the families of those burried here. If it's a California native then maybe the Natve Plants Demonstration Garden might take it of my hands. Thanks for the info. Food for thought and butterfly! I tip my hat to you.
