I have about 200 now and 400 plus seedlings. Built some raised beds this year as no room left in the other beds. Yes I am obsessed.

i might have to take a cue from rita and you with the raised beds to fit more in. Or start working on the back yard a couple of years sooner than anticipated and put some in there.

My dad built me a raised bed this fall! I already have a few things lined out in it.

Left and Right side of the raised bed behind the greenhouse. The far left side will be left empty until spring. It is 24'x4'. I honly hope it is not too high. It was only to be one section high but the guy built it when I was not there.

I will be putting up more lattice in the spring as want to grow some Clematis at the back. Will feed and water like crazy so they fill in good at the top and give us some privacy from the Apt. house next door.

with beds at that height, you can sit to weed, pinch, and pull rather than kneel. might work out better that originally planned?

Knee Surgery? Sounds painful, sure hope it helps.

Debra my problem is I am short-5'1". Don't have enough of me to reach the back of the bed when the scapes are 1-2' high. It may be a challenge but I will figure something out.

Build a small step/ledge around the perimeter? A padded one so you can kneel to reach over?

Another thing I realized after taking some photo's./I ran out of metal markers and forgot to order more before planting so just used the small plastic tags I had in the pots. Will I looked at the Pic,. and decided to take some close-ups so if a tag gets ruined or lost I can figure out from the tags around it what that one might be so I took about 2dz. images and when I zoom in I can read most of them.

That looks great Steph!! To make sure you don't lose your daylilies ID, buy some plastic knives, write the names and bury it beside the plant.

This is a good discussion - I am going to split this into a separate thread on raised beds!

I used to grow daylilies in raised beds. They did not have any wood or anything around them. I had the whole bed tilled, then shoveled the soil from where I wanted aisles onto the bed area. They ended up being several inches above the paths after they settled in. After I cut way back on what I was growing, a friend dug up all my plants for me, and the neighbor re-tilled the bed. We added some new amendments, then made beds the same way. Then, we replanted all the daylilies. That was several years ago, and the beds are still a few inches above the paths.

I have several plants I got this spring in the closer side of the L shaped bed. I buried the tags that came with them and also put a small stake by them so if I lose those I can ID when dug up. A plastic knife would work great too.
The soil in the long bed is from the Hospital lawn they dug up to expand the parking lot. There are huge chunks of sod in the left side so put some compost on top of it to let it break down over winter. The L shaped bed has some real nice composted manure from a ranch here that is about 30 years old mixed with some sand. The seedlings are loving it. I could see a difference the day after getting them in which was almost Sept. in that bed. The other long was was mid Aug.

Stephanie, that looks good and I was thinking the same thing Debra said in that it might be easier to work at that height than lower. Are those this years seedlings that you planted out? Sorry that I can't tell from looking but I don't hybridize so I don't know what size certain age seedlings would be.

As everyone knows I do have lots of raised and terraced beds. Mostly out of block, pavers or stone borders. I do have one wooden square raised bed that is 7by7 feet. No daylilies in that one though as I have Tall Bearded Iris in there.

Rita the 1 bed has this years seedlings and the other has last years. They are no further ahead than this years after being pampered all winter indoors at 50 degree under lights.

That proves they need to be outside.
