I should know this tree, it's real familiar ... but again, my old brain is not cooperating. It's growing on the southeast side of my house in full sun. It's breezy out right now so I haven't been able to get decent pictures but hopefully someone will recognize these leaves, bark, seeds ... It's the skinny little tree amidst the Palms, etc.
so are there different varieties of sumac? The one in my link above is just photos of sumac in general, not a sepecific type. We have sumac in MO that is how I recognized it.
Yes--there's a poisonous type but it's the poison one. The type you can use for spice (Rhus typhina) is the one I see all the time along the roadways here. Here's an article about finding and gathering the berries. http://www.seriouseats.com/201...

Well ... I'll be! Yep, that's it! I even looked at photos in my file folders of Rhus copallina (I also have photos here in our database) but for some reason I didn't think that was it! Thanks so much @Frillylilly@XiaoLong and Janet!
