Beautiful! And that was pretty fast, considering all the work you probably had to do on it!

Thanks, all. I used a combination of methods - digging up one square foot at a time with a shovel in those area where I wanted to plant right away or if the soil level was too low, smothering with newspaper, soil and compost to create a raised area or to level out a slope on those area that I was able to leave over the winter, and using roundup in just a few spots where I wanted to kill the grass, but I was not ready to plant yet and did not want the bare soil to erode.

Renee - do you have relatives in Sacramento? You are welcomed any time!

Hetty - a few inches here and there is all you need to eventually end up with none. Whistling

My original goal was just to create this small raised bed for a peony plant that I bought a couple of years ago. At the beginning, I had no intention of tackling the whole lawn because I thought it would be too daunting.

The one thing I wish I had is some height variation. Everything here is FLAT. I yearn for a large rock to plant some succulents on...

Dianne, I used to live in the Sacramento area, and have friends there, and my son lives in San Francisco. It may be a few more years before I fly again, though.

Hetty, rocks are "the thing" now --- you must have seen someone in the Naples area advertising big rocks for sale. Order one up!

Toni - did you use to have 2 crepe myrtles? I like them, except for the fact that the blossoms are everywhere once they start falling.

Hetty - I got my rocks from the neighbor across the street who was doing a grand remodeling of his backyard. There were rocks surrounding his pool, but he wanted them out. So, guess who got them? Big Grin He was even kind enough to move them over to my yard for me. If you look at some of the rocks, you can see where the water line was.

Much of my landscaping is shaped by what I can get for free....... Rolling on the floor laughing

I am still in the process of getting rid of "lawn".
The green, green "lawn" is an artifact of the 50s when the chemical and machinery companies
promoted the chemical lawns. These chemical "lawns" are not environmentally sound.

There are new "no mow" mixes, which offer more biodiversity in one's yard.
I am going to experiment with these after I get rid of the "lawn".

BIODIVERSITY is Nature's Plan---let's get back to her plan in our yards.

We haven't had a lawn mower or weed eater for years. I do need an alternative to cut some problem grasses down, however! What's a good way kill KR Bluestem without it coming back? That's what I'd like to do!

This thread popped up on my radar again, and I am happy to announce that I no longer have a single blade of grass, AND I have my rock. Two, two be exact. Hurray!
