I think you have it Daisy. I was looking at Cylindropuntia subulata but couldn't find one which look to have so few spines, or even quite the same shape. It looks like this one has lost most of it's spines.

I thank all of you for your help. I have had this cacti for many years and lost all but this piece moving last October. All this time I never found anyone in Houston that could identify this cacti. I am so happy to find this site and such smart people.http://garden.org/i/s/thankyou.gif
