Looks like a species of Ligustrum. It's a very invasive exotic species from an ecological standpoint.

Thanks Horntoad, I think you nailed it. After reading over plant guides and reviews at Daves Garden, I'm convinced I need to get rid of it, pronto.

No, they can't. That's the problem with invasives. People think they can keep them in control, but it doesn't happen, they get out of control. That's what make them an invasive.We're not talking about how it behaves in a garden but the environmental impact.
